I have had on and off issues over the last few months with my network connection on my PC. I pay for Gigabit connection with Virgin Media and "usually" get this speed. However, my speed will drop to 100/100 for no reason every so often. I can usually fix it by unplugging and plugging the cable in, however, this is usually undone within 10-20 minutes. When it drops back to 100 it also disconnects me from anything I'm doing (not good for my working from home situation...)

I have installed new drivers, contacted the ISP (they offered to send me a 2m cable which wouldn't be long enough to cover the distance for my flat). I am using Cat5e

EDIT: PC specs

i7-12700K
MSI 3080
32GB 3200mhz Corsair RAM
Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4

How long are we talking?

Most likely is the cable, an end not crimped properly. Gigabit requires all 4 twisted pairs (8 wires) to make proper contact to negotiate gigabit, if one wire is off it'll default to two pairs resulting in megabit.

Cables don't cost much and come in all sorts of lengths. Can probably get one made up if none of the sizes meet your criteria. Cat6a cable is fine to use and compatible with cat5e, they use the same rj45 ends.

I reckon it's over 20m? I have a cable I did myself from a couple years back when I was still in Uni. Seemed to be fine up until recently! Might have to just bite the bullet and grab a 25-30m Cat6 cable and hope it works! Although I laid the cable before we fully moved in so the Cat5e cable is behind a bunch of big furniture haha
