I built a new PC couple years ago but kept my old 24 inch Dell Ultrasharp IPS 1920x1200, since I was happy with it. Now I've been looking to go up to a 27 inch display, but I don't know which way to go. My GPU is 1080 ti so not a rocket by any means. I do 95% desktop + watching movies/series (2160p or 1080p), 5% light gaming. I've been to the shop to look at different displays, but they're running demo modes and not in desktop so it's really difficult to say anything about how text looks on them.

I like the idea of getting better resolution for movies but would a 4k monitor go to complete waste here and is my GPU too slow to take advantage of it? Would a 2K IPS display offer any significant upgrade from my current Dell? I can come up with a budget for the display, if it feels like I'm getting something noticably better for it.

Thanks!

27 inch @ 4k is pushing it.
Everything will be very small and windows scaling will need to be set to 200-300%.
For most things this is fine but causes problems with some programs/games.
If the text on displays look good in the store then they will look good in regular mode.
Demo mode is usually just exaggerated digital vibrance to make the monitor colors look good in a brightly lit store.

Bust your budget if necessary to buy the very best monitor you can.
It will be with you for a very long time.
I would look for a much larger 4k monitor.
GTX1080 will nave no problem with it so long as you are not into fast action gaming.

And... plan on keeping your old monitor as a side monitor for email, monitors, etc.

I just went to 4k. but I went from 27" 1080p to 49"4k and it is a world of difference. But takes a little tweeking and adjustment from you.
THX! But how on earth do you use a 49" display for desktop? Use only the middle 30ish inch and have the sides black? I do quite often use split screen in desktop, and my 24" is a tad small for that. So I could use some more space, but I don't know if I would know where to go with 49" 😵

Oh and what is the aspect ratio on your display? How does it work with movies? Do you end up with black sides?

Yeah the 1080 is a nice card, have no need for a faster one yet. My Dell is about 11 years old and I would absolutely like to get a display that would be with me for a long time, so that's why I'm doubting if going for a 2K monitor would be smart. I don't think I have enough space for two displays on my table, but thanks for the suggestion!

Windows desktop full screen to show of my Hubble,Webb, Space photos.
Browsing and Email etc are set to be about 3/4 height and width.
Games, videos, movies etc are full screen., plus I'm about 3 ft or 1 yard back from the screem. My desk is very large. About a 14 inches past the screen on both sides.
New old stock.

I have an LG 32GP850-B 32.0" 2560 x 1440 165 Hz Monitor which I am happy with, I use it mainly for gaming and watching movies.
Funny thing, this is the exact same display I really liked at the shop yesterday. 👍 Really enjoyed the picture quality, very nice. How has it been for productivity, is the text sharp and have you noticed any eye strain?

I'm just wondering if I should just go ahead and purchase this for 449€, or try to find a mini-led display on sale. They have been available in discounts for around 700-800€. I'm sure in desktop use this 2k display will be more than sufficient but I'm just wondering how much better the video experience would be with a 4k display and 2160p video files.

I haven't noticed any eye strain and the text seems sharp enough. My only gripe about the monitor is that there is a brief delay when waking it from sleep, I think due to the screen setting software. It seems like it has gotten more expensive since I bought it 2 years ago as I paid £372.

Sorry to bother you but a quick question.. If you had to get a new display right now, would you pick a similar nano-IPS 1440p display again or would you go up to 4k?

I wouldn't go to 4k because I like to play games and if I did have a 4k monitor I would need a really expensive graphics card to push all those extra pixels. I guess I could use DLSS upscaling but I don't know I think if I were to go to 4k I would be looking at a 42" TV.

If I were to buy a monitor today I think I would be looking at getting a QHD QD-OLED.
