Good low-budget AMD CPU?

Good day,

I've got a full system laying around in spare parts, and when attempted to build it stupidly dropped the CPU and bending the pins.

I'm looking for an AM3 CPU that's cheap but also still pretty good for late 2014. I'm not an expert in AMD stuff so I don't know what to be looking at.

You can find an FX-6300 CPU for about $110. It's a six core processor clocked at 3.5Ghz base. It will do fine for another 1-2 years.

Must say I've been looking at that one. I'm also thinking about putting an i7 into my main desktop and buying a new case and mobo for it. So if I were to build this secondary system it would unfortunately need to be fairly low budget. Thanks for the info. It's annoying because the one I bent the pins on was Black Edition 3.2gig x6

You could try to unbend the pins but it might not be possible depending on how bad it is

The reminds me of how my friend failed to install his CPU. Ended up bending the pins on a Sabertooth motherboard XD

What motherboard do you have? not all am3 motherboards will work out of the box with a Vishera processor.

Most should, with a BIOS update.

Bio update can't happen without the processor.

As well as not being able to update the BIOS without a processor, you need to consider the TDP compatibility of the motherboard. If the damaged processor was the Phenom II X6 (I assume so) then TDP won't be a concern, but it's important to ensure compatibility.

The FX-6300 is your best bet, providing that it fits your budget.

I would actually opt for the FX-8320. Quite a few games are asking to have that as a minimum, and it's only $135.

Just remember to check if your motherboard supports CPUs with a TDP of 125W.
