Hey,

I haven't been on TH forums since I built my PC 9ish years ago... And with that I'm still rocking the 6700k and 4GB R9 380 I put in it back then. I wasn't having a problem running games on *meh* settings at 2k, but I've recently acquired a 4k 160hz panel...... Naturally with the DP1.2 limitation of the 380 I'm stuck at 60Hz. But I'm also stuck with the 380 limitation of the 380, and it won't push more than 35-40 fps in FH4, for example, on high settings.

So my question to you is, what GPU should I get? Is the Skylake chip going to be a massive bottleneck? I'd like to play Forza titles and GTAV in 4K, with decent settings (high is perfectly adequate, ultra would be a bonus if possible) and reach at least 60 FPS, ideally closer to 100. Is there a GPU that will do this for me with my current setup or am I looking at a CPU+mobo upgrade too?

Not really bothered which side of the Red-vs-Green argument it falls upon. I'm after whichever will get me the most performance for the least pound (Sterling, hi from the UK!)

Not even the best GPU currently out there, RTX 4090, will do 160 FPS on 4K.

What i'm more interested at, is what PSU you have. Since these high-end GPUs consume a lot of power, and in turn, need a beefy PSU. E.g for RTX 4090, you're looking towards 1.6kW (1600W) PSU.

i7-6700K would do fine on 1080p gaming. Unsure why you got 4K monitor. :unsure:
E.g in my Skylake build (full specs with pics in my sig), i'm running i5-6600K and that is paired with GTX 1660 Ti. Good enough for my 1080p 144Hz monitor. And i5-6600K isn't that far off from i7-6700K. Your chip only has hyperthreading, which for Skylake architecture chips, doesn't help in gaming. Usually makes it worse. Can link the i7-6700K hyperthreading test data, if interested.

As seen from the image above, then either RX 7700 XT, RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT.

That's a great quality PSU. (y) Wattage wise, more than enough for RTX 4070, RX 7700 XT or RX 7800 XT.
You could go up to RTX 4070 Ti Super, if you like. But for RTX 4080 or RX 7800 XT, 1kW (1000W) PSU is better suited.

Price wise, i'd say easy 400 bucks.

Oh, about possible CPU replacement;
1st get the better GPU, which is confirmed to give 70+ FPS. Plug it in and look if you get the FPS needed. If you do, great, you can run your chip some more. If not and when falling short, then buy new CPU-MoBo combo and transfer the new GPU over. No point buying it now, without you knowing if there is actual need for that.

If you'd go back to your 2K monitor, you'd get far more FPS. E.g:

Nice ~152 FPS with RTX 4070 Ti Super, which is max what your PSU can handle. Or easy 100+FPS with RX 7700 XT.

And so I take this battle to Google, and it seems that 7700 XTs run £400 in the UK, whereas 7800 XTs run for £450, and 4070s for £500...

That clearly seems to favour the 7800 XT in terms of value looking at the benchmarks above !

I think I may be onto a winner here but will watch this space. Thank you for all your help!

With a 4k monitor, you can always run at 2k.
Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer tends to like many threads.

Run this simple test:
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

There are many graphics upgrades available.

I like this test. Yah my FPS increases when I drop res and settings in FH4

And this is a really good point. I humoured myself and chucked FH4 at 2k this afternoon and surprise surprise it still looked great (esp with HDR on, something my old monitor did not have)
