Hello, I wanted to upgrade my GPU and I was wondering which options would be best for 1440p Gaming, I am running a Ryzen 9 3900X and a 5700XT, and I wanted to mostly upgrade my GPU because I know that it will bottleneck my CPU, which GPU do u think would be the best to upgrade to for solid 1440p gaming? I also don't wanna change my CPU right now because switching to AM5 would mean getting new RAM and a whole new motherboard so for now I am looking to upgrade the GPU, Thanks! I was maybe thinking of the 7800 or the 7900 series or maybe waiting for AMD's 9000 series, I guess I'll see then.

what is your budget for said gpu.

your current power supply ?

amd 7800 xt is good
amd 7900 gre is good.
nvidia 4070 super is good.

you can wait for the next gpu release but id wait for reviews.

What I would do:

Buy
the Ryzen 7 5700X3D
Sell the Ryzen 9 3900X

Buy the RX 7800 XT
Sell the RX 5700 XT

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-5700-xt.c3339

You're looking at a 100% improvement of rasterization graphics and a doubling of VRAM. Not to mention the higher FPS numbers from the CPU upgrade. Both of these combined would make for a very shrewd purchase.

yeah I was thinking about the 7800xt so that is a very good choice and I think I can sell my GPU, but about the CPU, I think I will save more money and maybe upgrade to am5 instead of buying another am4 cpu

Hi there!

Your Ryzen 9 3900X is still a great CPU for 1440p gaming, so upgrading your GPU is definitely the right move for now. Based on your setup and your focus on 1440p gaming, here are a few recommendations:

1. AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT

This is an excellent choice for 1440p gaming. It offers great performance at a reasonable price point and pairs well with your 3900X without introducing much (if any) bottleneck. It's also a solid jump from your current 5700 XT in terms of performance.

2. AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT / 7900 XTX

If you want to future-proof your setup for a few years or explore some 4K gaming down the line, the 7900 XT or XTX would be fantastic options. These GPUs are extremely powerful, and while they are a bit overkill for pure 1440p gaming, they’ll handle any title with ease and offer great performance in ray tracing.

3. Wait for AMD's 9000 Series

If you're not in a rush, waiting for the next generation (9000 series) could be a good idea. New GPUs often bring better power efficiency, performance, and value. However, the current 7800 XT and 7900 XT/XTX are more than capable and should last for years if you don’t want to wait.

Other Considerations

  • NVIDIA Options: If you're open to NVIDIA, GPUs like the RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 4080 are strong contenders for 1440p gaming, especially if you’re interested in DLSS 3. They might be a bit pricier than AMD’s offerings but are worth considering for features like ray tracing and AI upscaling.
  • PSU Requirements: Check your power supply to ensure it can handle the power draw of newer GPUs. The 7900 XT/XTX and 4080, in particular, can be power-hungry.
  • Future CPU Pairing: If you eventually switch to AM5, GPUs like the 7900 XTX or 4080 will scale well with newer CPUs.
In short, if you want something now, the RX 7800 XT offers excellent value for 1440p gaming. If you want to go all-in, the 7900 XT/XTX will future-proof your setup. But if you’re patient, waiting for the next generation might bring even better options.

Hope this helps! 😊

I play at 1440p. I had a solid experience with my 5900x paired with a 6700XT Red Devil (12 GB VRAM).
Some titles were starting to show a bit of reduced frames (45-50 ARK Survival Ascended - notoriously badly optimized. ) on the 6700XT @ 1440.

Since then I have upgraded to the 7900XT (20GB VRAM)

I gave my 6700XT to a friend who has an older 10th gen I5. He has a horrible time with the CPU running at 100% while the 6700XT is just requesting more info than the CPU/system can supply, crashing the frame-rate and slowing down the whole machine.

Point being, there is no point to make a major upgrade on the GPU without also doing the same on the CPU.

yeah I think I might upgrade to one of the AMD options, Nvidia is a little bit too pricey

im gonna maybe save up and switch over to am5 later on, but for now I wanna upgrade my GPU, what do u guys think for the GPU, was thinking about the 7900 or 7800 series and it has to be like under $550, I have an 850watt psu btw

personally id wait for the 9000 series to roll out then get the 7900xt once its reduced down. for whatever reason there are not many 7900 gre in usa dunno why.

but considering the 7900xt can be had for 649 to me its worth the additional cost.

its up to you when to pull the trigger. id keep an eye on pricing

only go with 7800xt if your budget is tight at very least the 20 vram on the 7900xt will give it a bit more longer life. or if you decide to switch to 4k down the road it leaves you options

'tis sad.
I hope the rumors regarding the upcoming 10,000 series are true.
There definitely needs to be more good rasterization cards with 20+ of vram.

personally id wish they would focus on the software side more i feel like alot of the actual hardware is held back by crap drivers and there hair engine is been abysmal. im hoping now that the company is stop chasing high end that they can focus on drivers and features make them better its what they lack.

focus on the software side more
Team red is improving in that department.
I believe the green team is banking a bit too much on frame generation.
I do play in 4K, but I prefer to at least render 75% of the actual game. If I couldn't do it, then I wouldn't be playing at that resolution.
As long as the choice exists, there's a happy medium for everyone.

on the newer cards going forward there seems to be to much focus on frame gen but that seems to be across the board atm

Well, a fair amount of retailers had significant specials on the 7900XT. The closer we get to the launch of the new AMD GPU's the cheaper they'll get. I got the 7900XT over Christmas and was surprised at how little it differed in price compared to the 7800XT. I think there is like a 23-27% performance difference between the two, but often the price difference does not correspond to this. Shop around and wait a bit for the pricing to drop then compare the new cards with the current line up and see what fits your budget. ie, the new '9700xt' or whatever could be on par with the 7800XT and 20% more expensive. great time to be in the market for a GPU as you are gonna have so many options soon.

I had the 6800xt which was essentially similar to your 7800xt, and ended up catching a deal on a 7900xtx. Truth be told, if I wanted to be on a budget, the 6800xt was still perfectly fine and performed well. But on the other hand I got the xtx for 800 and sold the 6800 xt for just over half that so a nice discount if you look at it that way.

But there should be quite a bit of new stuff coming. The value bus could be cards like the 7800xt or the outgoing rtx 4000 series cards, such as the 4070 for example.
