So I have an old (SATA II old) Samsung 1 TB HDD. Its been making grinding noises for years and hasn't died. It seems to work fine generally but i don't know if i should replace it. I don't really have anything important on it and i still use it (its my only drive). Does anyone know why the grinding noise is happening and if i should actually replace it since it works fine.

Solution
It can die at any moment.
Right now as I'm typing this, or it could last another several years.

There is no "prediction".
But, a drive making weird noises is never good.

You've lived precariously enough. I'd suggest you replace the drive or at the very least, retire it while the data on it is intact(assuming it holds valuable data). How old is old?
Again yeah its intact. It has no bad sectors or anything. It literally just seems like a perfectly fine old HDD (apart from the noise that is). And how old is old?- It was in the family pc before i used it in my PC and well about 25 000 Power on hours. Also CDI also says its healthy so yeah. Not that im on a mega tight budget i just wonder if i need to replace it that bad since id rather not spend another 60$ (which is not a small amount of money in my country) on a HDD.

Yeah i know, but like it keeps on giving and as i said in the other reply id rather not spend another 60$ (which is not a small amount of money in my country) on a HDD if i don't have to 100%
