I have contacted Rockstar support a total of 5 times. Although they were friendly and useful, they have exhausted all possible fixes of which none have worked. I am praying that you guys can shine some new advice down on me.

With over 1000 hours played of this game, I'll be very gutted if I can't get it to work. I have been trying to fix it for two weeks solid, pretty much.

I get the same error every single time:

System stats:

Operating System:
Windows 10
Processor:
Intel Core i5-6600K CPU 3.50GHz (4 CPUs)
Memory(RAM):
Corsair 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance Pro (32MB)
Graphics Card:
Nvidia Geforce GTX 970

Things I have tried so far:

  • Unplugging all USB ports except from a plain mouse and keyboard.
  • Stopping everything in ms-config apart from Windows services.
  • Turning off all start up services in task manager.
  • Deleting and reinstalling usb drivers.
  • Clean install of graphics drivers.
  • Clean install of GTA on different hardrives.
  • Deleting settings files and having the game recreate them.
  • Verifying Steam cache a million times.
  • Starting GTA in safe mode on lowest possible graphics.
  • Checking and fixing all Windows system files.
  • Making a second windows user profile with admin permissions.
  • Setting GTA to launch with admin privileges in compatibility mode Windows 7.
  • Clean install of GTA with Steam start with admin privileges.
  • Making sure GTA has access through Windows firewall.
  • Making sure the router has relevant ports open.

Possible Ideas I have left:

Fresh install of Windows 10
Resetting Bios
Buying a hammer and then a new PC setup :)

If we are truly in the brightest timeline, then someone out there knows how to fix this.

Reinstalling Win10 might be a good idea but first explain what happens exactly when gta5 crashes?

Do other games play fine?

Have you disabled fullscreen optimisation for gta 5? Google win10 fullscreen optimisation on how to disable.

Are you using Geforce Experience to install drivers or optimise gta5?

Have you tested your system under load with Realbench?

Tested ram with memtest?

Running any mods in gta5?

Multiple displays? Try just one for now.

That's all ive got for the moment. 😊

Some nice ideas already :)

Every other game I have played has been fine as far as I know.

I normally play borderless windowed but I have tried fullscreen. I have not heard of win10 fullscreen optimisation but I will give it a google after finishing this post.

When I clean installed the Nvida drivers I opted not to get Geforce experience as I thought it would just mess with the graphics settings for gta and other games.

I have not tested my system under load with realbench, havent heard of the software, but I will look into that aswell.

Testing ram with memtest was one of my ideas, I need to find a disk or usb disk so I can test them properly.

I am not running any mods for gta 5.

And yes I am using two displays, so that's something else I can try.

check windows event viewer...see if there is any driver (.sys file) under that crash

This is the information I get from the even viewer in windows logs/application

A failure over time suggests to me to be a thermal issue.
10-20 minutes is about how long it might take for heat to build up.

Could be either cpu or graphics card.

Take the case covers off and see if that changes anything.

Can you monitor your cpu and graphics card temperatures?

Have you overclocked your 6600K?
If so, back it off.

What is your cpu cooler? Perhaps it has come loose and needs remounting.

Since the problem happens only with GTA5, I would normally suspect a game patch of some sort.
Unfortunately, you have largely rules that out.
One unique thing about GTA5 is that it is very cpu centric and largely single threaded.

Focus more on the timing of the failure.
Is there something else in your system that might fire off in 210-20 minutes?
An email send/receive might fit that time frame.
What antivirus are you using?
Perhaps that is involved.
I find simple windows defender to be low impact and adequate.

With two displays, start task manager on the side display and monitor what other apps are running.
You might get a clue there.

In windows, there are many instrumentation settings that windows uses to collect data that they can sell.
You might go through the privacy settings and turn off what you can.
For instance, by default, windows can use your pc to distribute updates to others.

To be honest, from doing some research from the past month on google, a fair few people have had the exact same error and cannot find a fix either.

Out of things that seemed to help so far, unplugging my second monitor seemed to extend the amount of time before GTA decided to do the same crash again. Thought it was almost the answer I was looking for, sadly not.

The antivirus I am using is as you say windows defender.

I can certainly try leaving the task manager open and keep an eye on background processes but I'm, not 100% sure what I'm looking out for.

Edit: Just tried keeping an eye out for anything unusual while playing and crashing and saw nothing out of the norm tbh.

i can only believe this has to do something with the game itself because so far i never had these problems in any game and i've been gaming on this settings for almost 5 years. PC runs PERFECT besides the god damn online mode from GTA5

i've also heard from some higher levels in GTA5 online that alot of players are having crashing issues. one said: its happening since the casino update

Yea all this trouble seems to be since the casino update. After two weeks of working on fixes, all seem to be pointing towards it being the game.

Interesting. I have the exact same problem with random crashes every 10-20 minutes in. Windows event viewer shows identical exception code and fault offset (0x0396bc55).

I'm running with Ryzen 3700X rather than Intel, but have same GPU - GTX 970.

i also have the exact same problem.

My specs are
Operating System:
Windows 10 x64
Processor:
Intel Core i5-3570K CPU 3.40GHz (4 Cores)
Memory(RAM):
Corsair 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz Vengeance
Graphics Card:
Nvidia Geforce GTX 770
HDD:
120 Gb SSD for widows & 250 Gb SSD for games

Things I have tried so far:

1 Cleared cache
2 Making sure GTA has access through windows firewall
3 Making sure Router has relevant ports open
4 Reinstalled game
5 Cleared cache
6 Unplugging all USB ports except from a plain mouse and keyboard
7 Unplugging 2nd monitor
8 Stopping everything in ms-config apart from window services
9 Turning off all start up services in task manager
10 Done all the things that are in Basic-Troubleshooting-for-PC (https://support.rockstargames.com/articles/115014867468/Basic-Troubleshooting-for-PC)
11 I've tested my pc with memtest86 v8.2, Occt v5.2.1 (tested cpu ram video card and power supply) no program, benchmark or game is unstable in any way, its only gta and only after the casino update
12 Deleted PlayGTAV.exe and GTA5.exe and let the game redownload them
13 Ran the GTAVLauncher.exe -verify
14 Removed nvidia drivers and reinstalled them with clean install
15 Made a new user in windows and ran the game from there
16 Tried to lower my gpu ram usage (from 2560x1440 to 1920x1080 and most settings from high to medium)

Yeah it's got to be a game issue since the casino update. I have the same gfx card and I'm getting the same issue.
Nothing's overheating, doesn't happen to any other game.
Tried everything in this thread and more.
Just gotta hope R* patches this problem.

I also experience the exact same problem. I've been closely monitoring my GPU temperature for the last 3 weeks and the crashes occur at seemingly random times (sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes after 40 mins etc, sometimes I play 2 hours and it doesn't crash) and my insight is, the crashes are clearly unrelated to GPU heat. I have also run FurMark stress tests, checking whether the GPU crashes at some point under maximum power....but nothing.

Another thing to mention is that I've been playing the game without issues for the better part of 3 years, on the exact same system without any issues. Which also cancels out that it could be things like limited Win 10 support or unplugging the second screen etc, since I had all that from the beginning.

I have an open ticket with R*, who asked me to supply dxdiag.txt, msinfo and launcher log to them. I haven't heard back yet. I hope the crash ref codes might shed some light on where the problem originates. But as many of you say, it looks like it might just be the game itself....after the casino update. :(

What's also curious is, that none of my friends have comparable crashes. I also asked a few times in large public lobbies...but nobody said 'yes, i experience that too'. So for some reason it seems to effect only a small selection of players?

A few days ago I re-installed the full game and went back to a driver from march 2019 (I run on a GTX 980 ti). And it did seemingly work better for one day after that. But now I'm back to square one. It's very very frustrating, to say the least.

if its VRAM usage, than mine 1070ti has no issues (8g vram)
anyway vram usage is higher then game settings predicts (add 1GB vram to it), so thats about it, it doesnt seems to be leaking as they say on steam forum
engine just got more resource hungry
anyway...
1080p pretty much all settings high/very high eats a little over 4GB vram
1440p has smt around 4.5GB vram usage same settings

on the other hand 1440p everything maxed out..game suggests 5GB vram usage and real usage is 5.2...so thats ok

so lower settings just suggest different reources
1440p everything on lowest possible settings suggested 1.2GB vram, real vram usage 1.7GB

soo if u used to play on some settings....ull just have to dial it down a little bit
use msi afterburner/riva tuner server osd settings to see how much vram gets used

Guys I found this advise on steam. Disable all VPN client and virtual network adaptors. I use a cyber ghost (not connect during play only had the vpn software installed). I removed it completly incl. deinstall virtual network adaptor and just played 1 hour without any problems.
