Hey guys, Ive run into this issue multiple times while playing gta V. The game crashes quite often. Sometimes 20 minutes into playing, and sometimes 2 hours into playing. I get this error upon crash saying something like: Error, try to reboot or restart the game. Re-install if this message comes up again. I reinstalled the game, and my drivers, but this still keeps happening.
System Specs:
Gtx 980
i5 4670
8GB
It also says kernel gpu has stopped working (or something like that)
Im using the latest driver 350.12
Ive also noticed that disabling Nvidia TXAA in-game makes it work for longer. (could just be a coincidence.)
Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm using an NVIDIA 770 GTX and I have surely isolated it to the latest driver instead of the game itself, while the port may not be great, the most recent nvidia drivers completely ruin performance on really any other game on my PC, they wont even run and the only way to fix this for me was rolling back my drivers. When i disable the NVIDIA driver via device manager on the most recent update, games work, but when its not disabled they wont even start, except for GTA V which is the only game that will run. Its also quite frustrating that while using the rolled back driver, my character is covered in black lines in online mode, but i see no other solution.

For now I guess I'm just going to have to wait for an update for NVIDIA drivers that actually works with games other than GTA V

i have found a "temporary Solution" for single player campaigner .
(1). diable your network adapter
(2).run The game
(3.) ctrl+alt+delete Run "taskmanager "
(4.)in Task manager go to process tab
(5.)in list you can find three or more expolrer.exe
(6).right click on the first one and "End Process"
(7).Don't panic the deskop icon and every thing will be gone but the game will be running . I have played hours without crashing .
(8.) after playing ctrl+alt+delete and from option restart for using your pc again for other uses

I live in a small town, and highest internet speed is 3meg, and it's not the most stable connection either. Iv noticed I'll crash every heist sometimes, reboot the Internet (turning it completely off for atleast 30 seconds) and that tends to fix the crash for atleast 4-6 hours... Then it'll start crashing again over and over... Reboot Internet and back to normal again

My crashes seem very closely related to all of these. Just a file error, not a freeze, and nothing indicates it's the router or modem it's like a bad ram error but that's not the case here

This is like the hundredth answer/question I've seen. This is a commonly, asked question and the reply is always "Yes" . I know I have and some other have, but i don't know about him 😛

Well, here's what's interesting

The driver was up to date, with v12.x.x... On the Intel Ethernet adaptor on the hero vii motherboard.

I hit check for update and it said the latest version was already installed...
I downloaded the driver from the ROG page and it said v18.x.x... And went through with the install of that, it said it installed that network adaptor successfully.. So I went to device manager and that one was still version 12, so this time I tried to manually update by going to the ROG install folder, and windows still determined it already had the latest driver. V12

So I had to uninstall the windows network driver completely, then run the asus install program.

Now all crashes have stopped! It took me a couple days to reply as I was making sure it was fixed before posting a definite solution to my case

So I am hoping.. Since a lot of us have high end machines playing this game and experiencing a similar crash...

Is windows telling you your driver is correct and up to date, when it really isn't??

@blcktrek
thanks for your feedback

windows is not a good source for checking the up to date drivers and Asus or other motherboard manufacturer are not the best source for that, too.

In your case the up to date lan driver should be version 20.0 from Intel.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/71305/Intel-Ethernet-Connection-I218-V

You can check other drivers with the intel update utility (better source but still not that good, searching manually is still the only way to get the newest drivers.)
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

not everytime the newest drivers are the best. If a system runs fine with older drivers, don´t update.

no comment 😛

I though these 353.06 drivers were great for the 7xx series. I run 2x 780ti's and honestly havn't had any issues other then the random crash after aiming out of a car but thats been fixed. With these new drivers, I set at 60+ fps everywhere with 99% GPU usage, unlike the previous drivers where my usage was everywhere with below 60fps in some spots.

Also im wonder how may users here are bypassing the vram limits? What I have noticed out my 500+ hours on this game, is when I bypass the vram or ignore suggested limits and crank up the details, my RAM usage sky rockets, peaking into the 12.7GB range out of my 16GB, Windows uses around 2GB idle. I wonder if all these crashes are from maxing out the system ram? I could be wrong. I read a lot of forums and noticed a similar pattern, most with memory leaking issues when they by pass the suggested limits with only 8GB or less of ram.

Also I noticed people who turned off page filing have crashes or too low of page filing, I found some people fixed their problems by turning it back to system managed.

Samsung SSD's I herd a lot of reports of people setting their SSD for most reliability and for whatever reason crashes the game with low memory warning.

Hope this helps some of you.

I have been experiencing these crashes a lot recently. Just now 3 times in a row. Always in the same mission, when Michael is chasing the chick through the airport. First crash when the truck explodes, then 2 seconds after the explosion and the last time after the police car is thrown. I quit. Even lowered the settings a bit. Enabled page file and all.

No known fix yet right?

Okay so I don't know if OP fixed this yet, but since you have the problem RSC5 as well as a few others in this thread, listen:

I see OP have razer logo, so I take it he has synapse installed. Now I have not read through these 60 comments so I don't know if this has been suggested.

In any case, if you have synapse, open it and click Stats. Now this is what's caused crashes for me in a few games, mainly The Witcher 3 in my case, so you want to Disable this altogether.

If you do not have Razer products RCS5 then you can forget I ever wrote this. However other users may find that this resolves crashing in some games.

I have been able to go past my crashes by turning off the ingame volume and also by distancing myself from all those explosions and chaos in the airport. After that I have had no crashes.

Hope it helps

It's the game.

I originally had an EVGA GTX960 FTW Edition; game crashed constantly and randomly. Sometimes 20 minutes in, sometimes 3-4 hours in (don't judge me, I have a problem 😛). After getting nowhere seeking help from Rockstar / NVidia / EVGA, I returned the card and bought a EVGA GTX970. I just installed it an hour ago.

I couldn't even get past the North Yankton prologue before the game crashed in the exact same way it always has. Don't bother asking about my drivers / temps / fans; everything is absolutely 100% perfect. I even did power-cycle testing on my PSU.

GTAV is simply a terrible port, just like GTA4. And just like GTA4, Rockstar won't do anything about it because they're too busy counting their stacks of money.

I also have similar crashes with GTA V.After restarting the PC, I can play about 1-2 hours ( different every time ) and then game just freezes and "error sound" rings at the background.Followed by this I opened task manager and saw the popular "ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT" crash error and the launcher suggested to reboot/reinstall the game.

When hitting retry ( starts the game again ) the game started windowed session. After alt+enter' ing the game back to full screen it crashes and gives the same situation as written above.Tried to run again, and like the last time, the game started in windowed mode again so I tried to play to see if it crashes in windowed mode - surprisingly, it did not crash in windowed mode. After playing for half hours, I alt+entered to full screen mode again and it crashed.

+temperatures of GPU and CPU are fine, not exceeding max levels.
+I have experienced freezes in BF4, CS:GO.In BF4 screen just freezes and I can only close it in task manager. The game freezes with 4/10 possibility rate.
CS:GO crashed and windows gave me " nvidia driver has stopped working and has fully recovered"
+when running FurMark in full screen, sometimes it gave me OpenGL error and the furmark test freezed. In windowed mode no errors and freezes.

What could be wrong here ?

Hope this helps the process of troubleshooting.
Any help higly appreciated.

i5 4460
gtx 680 asus directcu ii 2gb -did not ignore suggested limits in gta v settings
hdd, ssd
8gb ddr3 ram
win 8.1 64bit
nvidia driver 353.06, also same issues with 353.30

Motherboard?
Your problem is your system, not GTA.

Update bios.
which power supply?

Temps while running furmark stress test?
Uninstall drivers with ddu uninstaller and install newest from NVIDIA.com.
Check ram with memtest86+
Chevy hdd ssd
Temps of CPU while running a game? Use coretemp to log temp.

Thank you for instant reply, helpstar.

So far I have tested the 1TB Seagate HDD with seatools with long generic which gave no problems but I will also try to run your suggested software also.Memory have been tested with windows memeory diagnostic which also did not give me errors and I'll try memtest86+ aswell.

The board is called:
MSI B85-G43 http://www.msi.com/product/mb/B85-G43.html#hero-overview

PSU: Xilence Performance A 630w
spec_630w_aperformance_08_en.jpg

Are those amps and the PSU in general okay?

Temperatures I have measured so far:

HWmonitor - GTA Online - 2 hours of playing :
CPU: 65 C stock cooler
GPU: 65 C ASUS directcu ii

FurMark stress for 10 minutes :
GPU: 71 C

Today I have manually uninstalled all NVIDIA software from control panel and installed older version of GeForce software which is 350.12.

After installing, I have played the game for 2.5 hours without any problems.

In summary, should I be continiuing searching for the problem or just finish troubleshooting ( nvidia software problem ) ?

Edit:
5 minutes ago my PC just freezed slowly, I managed to open windows metro menu and task manager but then the whole system just hung.
What indicator is that ?

Something Interesting in the windows event manager at the time of the freeze?
Did you check the ssd with its manufacturer tool? Eventually update firmware of it, better doing this in another system.

Check the CPU with Intel cpu diagnostic tool

Which bios version is on the motherboard?

The psu is completely plugged into the motherboard? Especially the 2x4 pin ATX12V and the graphics card pcie power cables

Did you upgrade your system lately?

The psu should be sufficient and is quite good for this kind of cheap psu

Did not find any of a thing from event viewer near the freeze time.
CPU diagnostic tool passed the test without problems.

And thanks for a clue - I just updated the bios.

Yes, I have just checked all the PSU cables and HWmonitor is monitoring the voltages aswell - we can assume the PSU is functioning fine ?I had to choose between Xilence and Corsair and when I checked the amps, I decided to buy the Xilence ( ca. 60 eur price range both).

I have just built the system and playing the games for the first time on the new machine.

The freeze made me worrying so I am hoping to find the cause...
I will leave the memtest for longer testing..

So windows is a fresh install? All updates done?
Intel chipset drivers installed from Intel. Com ?

Did you use spacer between motherboard and case?

Run 3dmark basic edition (firestrike) and post the link from the result at the end.

Try another graphics card.

Windows is a fresh install and everything from windows update is installed except for win 10 home upgrade.Windows is installed on Kingston SSD V300 which has a GPT part. After installing windows I bought additional HDD for games and partitioned it to GPT in disk management.

Intel chipset is installed from msi page. After installing drivers from msi page I downloaded Intel update utility and the software does not show any updates available. Is it right or should I seek for a new software from Intels webpgae ?I have a feeling those auto updaters does not work perfectly.

Yes, I used those silver spacer nuts under every mobo hole.

Downloading the 3dmark software at the moment..

check your ssd with this:
http://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/kingston-ssd-toolbox.aspx
and check if the firmware is Rev. 603ABBF0

BIOS is now version 3.A ?

the intel chipset driver from the msi homepage is up to date (10.0.27)

any exclamation marks in windows device manager or question marks?

any usb devices plugged in? remove them, try other keyboard and mouse

check the motherboard´s cpu socket for bent Pins, like:

Could you upload some pictures of the hardware you assembled?
upload to any free image upload site and share the link
