gtx 970 vs gtx 1070 upgrade

Seeing how the 1070 is not released yet, it is too early to say. The 970 is a good card and you are probably going to be better off sticking with that for a couple more years.

WOW! I just bought my 970 two months ago. If I'm just gaming at 1080p and willing to tone down my settings, is it better to return/resell my card for a 1070... or should I play my 970 out until whatever comes out after the 1070 series?

It doesn't take hardly anything to game at 1080P anymore. My 960 gets about 60FPS on ultra on 1080P. There's no need for anything more than a 970. A 1070 / 1080 is overkill for 1080P.

Yes, just make sure you only game you play is ASHES OF SINGULARITY (the only game so far that supports different gpus).

Real answer: If you've had the 970 a while you can sell it because you've had your time with it and got your monies worth/not trying to get top dollar for it. If you just bought it within the last 3 months don't sell it and just enjoy it for another year at least.

You cannot run these together in SLI. you need another 970 like you have now.
As for the OP's questions
I am seeing a LOT of rumors going around.
The 1070 has not even been benched yet and the benches for the 1080
are not 100% official.
Every new release we go through this,
I would think some would learn?

according to Nvidia. i'd like to wait and see benchmarks and reviews.

also if aftermarket cards are likely to be released only days to a week or 2 after then I'm definitely going to wait for an EVGA one.

I and a lot of other people are buying for more than just VR. I need it for more fps (for higher refresh rate or higher resolution), more vram for higher resolution, triple monitor correction etc. all the new features are perfect for my needs

the 1070 is going to perform at least 2x a 970 in normal games. A 970 doesn't have enough juice for my needs anymore!

And it's VR performance is off the charts since it's optimized for it.

the 1000 series will be helping drasticly with VR, quite a bit actually where it would be worth it to me, if i had a htc vive

Just picked up this thread as I'm planning on upgrading from my 760 to the 1070, but want to upgrade my 21.5" IPS 1080p monitor to go along with it.

Thinking about going to 27" 1440p but don't know if I should go 144hz as these are expensive and I only really play strategy/rpg games, no online fps, any suggestions?

Also do you guys think the 1070 will be able to max The Witcher 3, Mafia 3, No Mans Sky etc. at 1440p?

There seem to be quiet a few of people who are hyped and eager to get the GTX 1000 series. Then there are also quiet a few people who like to think futurewise. An upgrade might be usefull as the 700 series are going to be outdated anytime soon I think, certainly with DX12. Some games aren't runable on high or ultra with the 700. And I'm not even speaking of the upcomming games...

What's the big deal with 1440p anyway? I have a 32 inch TV 1080p. My eyes even can do the 4K-trick if I go sit further away from my screen! Lol

Well considering the 700 series cards fully support dx12 they will be benefitting from it once game developers start to fully utilize it especially in sli setups. 1440p and 4k not only make things look better in game with more pixels per inch bit they also create more screen space. So yes 1080p looks good but you do get more with 1440p and 4k

They may be supporting dx12, but eventhough the 700 series is really powerfull, it still could bottleneck with a few games now. The list of those games will grow. Question is how fast? Also, it is said onto the forums of nvidia, that you'll miss some special effects and some performances. 700 series is an awesome series as I'm using the GTX 770 myself, but it is not going to be enough for futuregaming sadly.

And about 1080p vs 1440p and 4K, The human eye can barely see any diffrence, I think. To me, it's all overhyped, but everyone has his own opinion so.

Going 1080p to 1440p or especially 4k is a night and day difference. Gaming is much clearer, smoother edges, more screen space. Its a huge difference. If you are console gaming and sitting 10 feet from your tv then you wont notice mich but most pc gamers play 2-3 feet from their screens so its very noticeable.

Also for 1080p the 700 series while maybe in future games not being able to get ultra settings at 60fps small simple graphic settings can be changed to ensure high fps. I mean people still run 680's with good frame rates. so for gaming above 1080p the 700 series will be phased out sooner but for 1080p they are still good. Unless you are running like a 760 or something. A good rule of thumb though for anyone is to upgrade every 3 years at least unless you dont mind playing on medium settings.

Darn it... Wanted to upgrade my pc and stay safe untill 2025 :/

In the end, a high end pc gamer always wants the best things for his pc. It's the costumers choice. They can't be stopped. As for myself, I'm going to wait atleast till MSI brings something and upgrade other stuff first so that my pc is 1070-VR-ready.
