Hi all,

Did some research and finally wrote down a list for my game rig. I am going overclock this system like no tomorrow.

1. CPU: Opteron 165 with stock heat sink. (Brought already, and it's probably the last one in town).

2. Mobo: Asus A8N Sli Premium. (I don't really need SLi but I heard that if you use a dual core CPU, the Asus A8N-E will crash when connected with large current USB device. Is that true? Also, the slient heat sink on the mobo look good. Other suggestion are most welcomed.)

3. Case: Cooler Master Centurion CAC-To5-UW. (bargain branded model. I could go with the no brand models, they are cheaper but I have no idea how they are like.)

4. Power supply: Antec TruePower 2 550W (or will the 480W version be enough?)

5. RAM: Corair TwinX 2048 - XMS 3200C2 PT (or any other model of similar price).

6. Video Card: Asus 7900GT. (Normaly I don't pick Asus for video card as they tend to be more expensive, but they are going to have a big sale over here).

7. Hardisk: 250GB anything but Matrox. (Hear that they have problem with the NF4 chipset, right?)

Cheers,
Alex

The various 7900GT variants will tend to perform identically at given clock speeds, and I think you wold be quite happy with one run at even reference core/mem speeds.....

7. Hardisk: 250GB anything but Matrox. (Hear that they have problem with the NF4 chipset, right?)

There used to be some issues in the bios with some Matrox drives, but I hear they had been resolved via BIOS updates months ago...; I have no issues with my SATA 200gb Matrox drive on my MSI K8N Neo4....

(There are still some NF4 USB/SATA transfer bugs, where large 20+gb file transfers in one or the other direction cause hard locks/freezes, but these did not seem to affect Firewire/SATA transfers for some reason, and the prob is hard to predict, isolate, or fix, hence the Firewire workaround.....

Opty 165 hell yes

Asus A8N Sli Premium. Dunno about ASUS. That whole A8N line has been around for a while now. I couldn't see spending that much on that board when some new stuff is just around the corner. Get a cheaper board for sure unless money is no object.

Cooler Master Centurion CAC-To5-UW. Whatever you like. It's just a case.

Antec TruePower 2 550W. No way. Fortron or Seasonic. Up to 80% efficiency and high quality. Bah on all those others with their company logo slapped on them. Junk. Spend a little more now you'll be happy later.

Corair TwinX 2048 - XMS 3200C2 PT. Can't go wrong there.

Asus 7900GT. Nice

Hardisk: 250GB anything but Matrox. Hitachi Deskstar Sata2

looks good to me.

i have case that is pretty much the same as yours (mine has a side window) and i can say that is well built and has very good ventilation. (you might want to consider replacing the 120mm fan it comes with as the stock one runs a little low on the RPMs)
