Hal.dll missing errors during fresh install on new HDD

Hello Guys n Gals

I happened to come across on my computer that was infected with a virus (I'm not sure what it was now about a month ago) and I ran programs such as TDSS Killer and Combofix to try to solve the problem. After following many guides i had failed to remove the virus completely so decided to have done with the hard drive and get rid! However upon installing a new WD 160 gig hard drive (after I could afford one) and attempting to install windows XP I cannot get past the very beginning where upon using the XP cd it goes to load the setup files and immediatly before it should show the options screen either BSODS or gives me one of these errors:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.

Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

And:

Windows_root\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:



Ive tried many iterations of XP old versions, the latest and so far all have failed either on disc or USB to complete the reinstall.

If any help can be given I would greatly appreciate it.

Are you partitioning the new drive as one 160GB partition? If so, reduce the first partition to less than 127GB and try again. XP did not support boot partitions larger than 127GB until either SP 2 or 3.

You should not have bought a new harddisk if you were going to make a fresh install.All you had to do was go into the bios and change the boot sequence,so the cd drive boots first.Put the XP disk into the drive and start the computer.You wll be told to press a key to setup from the cd drive.When it comes to the part where it gives you three options to format your harddrive select the full format.This clears everything from your harddrive.Also when you are installing the operating system no files will be missing.

I forgot to say.Make sure the Windows XP's disk surface is clean.

I cant get that far in the install setup of XP thats the problem. You know when the XP install disk first loads the drivers? as soon as it is completes i get a bsod or the error mentioned above, I cannot seem to get to any options let alone the partitioning option.

Ok it well forget that i could of used my old one, it doesnt matter. Im well aware of changing the priority of boot which has been set to the CD-ROM since trying to reinstall my OS. The problem is, You know when the XP install disk first loads the drivers? (its the first thing that happens when the screen goes to the blue GUI) as soon as it is completes i get a bsod or the error mentioned above in my OP, I cannot seem to get to any options let alone the format option. This is not my first attempt at a fresh install, so it really has left me stumped!

If you BSOD on the install program then it sounds like either your XP CD is bad or your memory is bad.

They might also have a funky sata mode enabled though usually it passes install. It sounds like it's failing to create a functional MBR

It sounds like the kind of issue you get when reclaiming a drive from GPT

Ive tried Ubunto today to see if it made a difference. Its been awhile since ive installed, it so i describe it the best i can. When I load the Ubunto CD it spins says its loading the kernal or something it flashes by so quickly then it goes black and shows a logo that is a films strip = a man standing in a circle and goes black and restarts.

As mentioned before in this thred in a quoted response to you, I cannot even get to the recovery console they show in the video.

Ive got legit cds that are undamaged, that were infact unopend until the other day and they're not upgrades they are proper SP1 XP install disk's. This is why im stumped I cant even get past the first stage of the blue GUI when booting from CD. Ive also swapped memory around and that has not made any change.

It sounds like the kind of issue you get when reclaiming a drive from GPT

First of all whats a GPT, is it a protected partition basically? also a MBR? Sorry havnt come across these terms before!

Does it do the same thing with the old, virus infected drive? If you format it you'd be able to run a boot sector scanning program before and boot sector virus hosed the computer.I'd completely forgotten about the 127gb limit. You might just not be able to use that drive unless you get an SP3 installer disk.

After thinking about it after some sleep it occurred to me that unless you bought a drive for a mac, my idea doesn't have merit. MBR and GPT are partition tables, they tell the computer what the drive's content should look like. If you ever plan on using a drive previously formatted on a Mac it's worth knowing but for this issue it's unimportant

You should run a full memory test with something like Memtest86.
