Hi,

I have playing HL2 for the last few weeks, and I loved the game. Now, I have
finished it.

As I have never played the original Half Life game before, I was wondering
if it was still worth buying the game, or if I would just be very
dissapointed (as it is quite old now).

I have tried to see where to buy HL source from, but it seems impossible on
Steam (I don't get the option to buy HL source on its own, as I have already
HL2). Maybe I will just buy the original version on CD...

Thanks!

T.

I may be worth your while to play HL1 just to discover the origins of
the story. The grahics are not quite that of HL2 but still hi tech.
You may even want to continue the saga with Opposing Force for the
other viewpoint, and Blueshift, with our faithful sidekick Barney
Calhoon.

If you got used to the controls and gameplay in HL2, then you will find
HL1 easy to get used to. It's about the same. Quality of models and
textures is much lower, as you would expect from a vintage game :) BUT,
I will always enjoy the occasional replay. Myself, I think you'll enjoy
it.

You'll enjoy HL1 upto a point. I won't spoil it, but myself and my mates
all stopped playing at the same point. The bulk of it is really good and
the story is excellent, you'll recognise a few of the characters from HL2
too.

Watch for the G-Man.

Definitely worth playing HL1. As others say, the graphics are not as
good (but still pretty decent), but the level design and gameplay is
excellent.

In some respects I think it is better than HL2 - the transition between
levels and the fact that all weapons work in all areas makes the game
seem more of a whole; there is a greater variety of aliens and their
attack modes, and your weaponry (HL2 makes use of the physics engine to
create alternative combat options); the level loading times are almost
instantaneous and the game feels longer; the plot is a lot clearer (and
doesn't rely as much on extended scripted scenes to push it along)- but
there are surprises along the way.

Also, you can pick up the whole set of HL, OpFor and Blue Shift for a
bargain price nowadays - definitely value for money. If you enjoy them,
there are also tons of single-player mods out there.

A really good game is kinda timeless.
I think you'll likely enjoy it as the rest of us did.
You've already got all the controls down, just don't expect the same
graphics.
IMO, the story makes up for it though.

Also, I read that there is a High Definition patch for all these
'classic' HL games, which bring the graphics up to HL2 levels.

Do you mean the high-def pack that comes with Blue Shift? It vastly
improves the graphics but not to HL2 standards.... and the bloody thing
doesn't work through Steam as it's done by a 3rd party. Damn shame cos
TBH I miss it.

IIRC, there ARE ways to get the high-def pack to work with Steam.

The high-def pack mearly consists of a set of textures, models and sound
files that override those already present in HL. If those files are
extracted and places in the appropriate folders, then you can have all the
benefits of the HD pack. Unfortunatly I don't have clear instructions for
how to do this.

Hmm. Thanks for that. I do some googling tomorrow.

You'll need to replace the orginal files in the BlueShift .WAD files,
which requires a utility avainable here:

http://xenomorph.net/misc/half_life_hd_pack.php

You will also find instructions on how to do this, and a few more
helpful files.

The high-definition pack is included with Half-Life: Blue-Shift and is a
dramatic improvement on the original Half-Life models.

Unfortunately, the PC version is not as graphically impressive as it should
be but if you're a console buff, why not consider buying Half-Life for
Playstation 2? The models are of greater detail and are much closer to HL2
standards (moving eyeballs, etc).

Yeah but there's no keyboard and mouse support, is there?

I have the Dreamcast version, that was actually never released. It has Blue
Shift included, as it was originally designed for the Dreamcast version,
before the project was scrapped and Blue Shift appeared on PC instead. There
is keyboard and mouse support. I can copy it too ;0)
