hard disk turn off option

I have my computer running 24/7, will making the hard disk shut off after so many minutes extend the life of the hard drive, or just decrease the power consumption? What kinds of things will power the hard drive back up? (will a ftp connection do it)?

Anything that requires the hard drive to be accessed will spin it back up, including an FTP server. Spinning your hard drive up and down constantly will <b>not</b> extend the life of the drive, but rather, it will <b>decrease</b> the life of the drive because of the changing motion.
