Good evening,

I have a problem on my hard disk. My machine is Compaq Presario 1700
notebook operating system is Windows Me. Last month I had several problems
last and I sent my computer to the service center too. Unfortunately they
used Danish Version QuicRestore CD and installed Danish Version of Windows
Me. Then, I use my English Version QuickRestore CD and have been trying to
install it but I made a mistake that I clicked the wrong region, I bought my
computer in Asia and now I live in Denmark so I thought I can change the
region and clicked on "Europe" since then whenever I tried I got the error
message " QuickRestore Error #50:4 Please contact Compaq Service or your
dealer". I contact the Service Center and they told me to send back the
machine again. Here normally for repair it takes about 4 weeks to fix this
problem.

Then, as an alternative I use one of my extra hard disk and used the quick
restore cd now it works perfectly. So I am thinking to reformat the hard
disk which I have problems or send back to the service center and wait about
4 weeks. Please kindly help me to fix this problem, here I am a stranger and
I can not speak Danish.

Sincerely,

Cail

Forgive me but you have already answered your question by your own actions and experiences.

Why wait 4 weeks for a service centre to do what you have already proven that your compentent to do?

Unless you need to save any data.

Format the 'Danish' Windows HDD.

Use English Version QuickRestore CD and proceed as you did on your spare HDD, but make sure you get your region setting correct.

Good morning,
I reformatted the hard disk but the problem remains as usual. I am able to
install other operating systems by using other cds such as Windows 98, Me
and XP Pro but I cannot use the Compaq QuickRestore CD. This QuickRestore
CD have other programs also so I do not like to lost it and it is impossible
to extract the program also. First time when I used this hard disk it asked
the serial no. but now it does not ask. I do not know how can I reformat
this hard disk perfectly, so many ways I used to format this hard disk but
still having problem. Please someone help me.

Sincerely,

Cael

Have you tried booting off of the Compaq QuickRestore CD? Try changing
the boot order in your BIOS to allow booting off the CD (or look for the
prompt, sometimes esc. key, that allows you to choose the boot device).

This error is because you don't have Windows XP on the machine you are
trying to perform a Quick Restore for.

The very simple solution to this 50:4 error is as follows:

1- Install Win XP on the computer from any CD (Compaq or non Compaq).
2- Boot the machine to Win XP.
3- Put Quick Restore's CD-1 in the CD Drive.
4- Restart the machine.
5- Follow the on-screen instructions

And you will not get this error any more

I have tried this solution and it worked perfectly for the Compaq
Presario Notebook.

I don't know if the same is true for other Compaq models such as the
Deskpro, Armada ... Etc.

I hope this fixes the error for you and all others.
