Hard Drive config

Hi folks,

I had a problem with my system earlier which I posted to the group regarding HD problems... obviously.

In the original situation I couldn't get a Maxtor 4 Gb to operate reliably when it was installed as a slave drive on the first IDE Channel with my Quantum as master. (2 CD drives on channel 2)

The solution was to swap the slave CD with the slave HD.
My question is... Can anyone explain to me why this would happen?

I've had similar problems in the past. It appears that certain drives are not compatible with each other on certain motherboards.

There are some drives i.e. Western Digital, which have a drive single setting and also a drive master with slave setting. See if your Quantum has such a setting. Other than that, I did the same thing as you to get around the problem.
