was it included with some particular hardware,
browsed on some retail site,
found in a local shop, etc..?

Yes, I found it on a well know Chinese online market place.

Either stick to well known and proven pastes like Arctic, Thermal Grizzly, Cooler Master, KMS or Noctua. everything else is a gamble.
