HD 5850 vs. GTX460

Hi there,
Im stuck between these cards which i am looking to get at around the same price. Ive looked at benchmarks of them and they are always different, sumtimes the one and sumtimes the other. The cards are:
1) Zotac GTX460 1GB
2) MSI Radeon HD R5850 TWINFROZR II 1GB
Im looking for the 1 better for DX11 gaming since more games are starting to use it, but still great in DX10.

You might consider getting a GTx 460 768MB. They are being phased out (replaced by new GTX 550 Ti) so there should be continuing sales on them. A few days ago they had an EVGA GTX 460 768MB overclocked model on sale at newegg for $110. It is off rebate now so no being sold at such a discount, but you might watch for others in the next few weeks.

Note that the 768MB version is only marginally slower than the 1 GB version and the difference may not be noticed in most games.

ive just read some reviews and it sayss the 5850 twin frozr is bad for OC..now i want to OC my card not insanly but just a bit to make a difference. would the twin frozr still be the best bet? or any other 5850 or GTX460 be better for OC?

DirectX 11 tesselation performance, is the primary drawback of the AMD 5000 series.

I say get the 5850. Overall it's a little better than the 460. The cooler should be fine for OC, but of course as they say your mileage may vary. Even so a modest overclock will get you to 5870/6870 levels in alot of games.

5850 would be the better overall performer.

Radeon HD5770,
4GB RAM,
Coolermaster 600W
19" Moniter (upgarding in near future)
Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit

Are you replacing the 5770? If you're looking selectively for better dx11 performance then go with the 460 1gb model, as it's better then the 5850 by a few frames.

Overall though, the 5770 is still a decent card. If you're planning to sell it, I would suggest a slightly better card.

Yes the 5870 is a fair bit faster that the 5850... but if you already have a 5770 you might consider going crossfire 5770s, which performs generally a little faster than a 5850 but slower than a 5870. It should save some cash though, although if the prices on these other cards are really plumetting then I guess just upgrade to the best single card.

Um... well I mean that's a fair choice and all. But, if you have 2 PCIe 16 lanes, you can crossfire... especially if you can SLI, you can crossfire. One of crossfire's benefits is that it works on basically all motherboards, whereas SLI needs some Nvidia chips on the mobo and the SLI certification.

Why don't you keep your 5770, and save up on a better motherboard? I would rather replace the weaker end hardware then the decent GPU you have. In fact, your resolution should be fine. Instead of getting a new monitor and GPU, why not slowly upgrade the motherboard and CPU?

I still say go with the GTX 460 768MB option. Note that it moves you up 3 tiers on the THG hiearchy chart:

And while not as cheap as the one on sale for $110 I mentioned above, here is a good EVGA card for $140 AR - list price is $190 (although you still might want to wait a little and watch for sales):
