Question HDMI over ethernet balun issue - Screen goes black and signal cuts out when launching HDCP content such as Netflix or Disney+

I am currently running into an issue where the HDCP handshake causes my HDMI over ethernet balun to black out and stop displaying a signal until I unplug the balun, and plug it back in.

This is the balun I am currently using: J-Tech Digital 4K@60Hz

It works great otherwise. I have it connected with CAT 6 running about 30 ft. It is pulling a signal from a gaming PC in the living room, looping it back to the living room TV, and then extending it over CAT 6 to a TV elsewhere in the house.

It displays 4K@60Hz just fine, and I can see the PC desktop and run games without any issues.

However, the second I navigate to any streaming site such as Netflix or Disney+ and start playing content, both TVs black out and stop displaying any signal. I can reset it by unplugging the ethernet cable from the receiving balun, and the image comes back and I can play Netflix shows without any issues.

I was wondering if there was any way to prevent the HDCP handshake issues whenever I start streaming a show. I have a cheap HDMI splitter that strips the HDCP signal, but it also degrades the quality of the image being sent and I don't want to add another device into the chain that could possibly fail. I would like the setup to be as simple as possible.

It's not super convenient to reach behind the TV to reset the balun every time I want to stream a show, but if that's the only way to fix it, I was also wondering if there was a way to automate the resetting of the device.

Where did the CAT 6 cable come from?

Substandard and fake Ethernet cables are a big problem.

Try a known working Ethernet cable - CAT 5e should be fine. UTP, 22-24 AWG pure copper. No CCA (Copper clad aluminum) or flat cables.

It was a 100ft roll from Home Depot. I terminated it myself with Keystone jacks and have no issue with image quality. It was the cheapest CAT 6 they had (unless I wanted to buy the 250ft box, which was overkill). From the keystone jack to the balun, on either side, is a 3ft flat CAT 6 cable I ordered from Amazon.

Are you saying that flat cables don't pass along the HDCP handshake properly?

That is usually correct.
The wire gauge is too small. Being flat, it looks good though...😉

Ok, I just switched both flat ethernet cables with round CAT 6 instead. When I launch Netflix now, the screen still flickers black for a second, but comes back right away. It must just flicker while doing the handshake, but at least it isn't dropping.

I'll monitor for a little while and see if that resolved the issue completely!

Thanks for the help!
