Question HDMI switch appears live to laptop but no signal on monitor

I am having some problems trying to use an HDMI switch between a Lenovo laptop (X13 Yoga) and an Acer monitor (ET322QU Abmiprx). I connected one HDMI cable from the laptop to the single port on the switch and another HDMI cable from one of the other two ports on the switch to the monitor. I pressed the button to select the correct channel. At this point, it did look like to the laptop an external monitor was connected but no signal is detected on the monitor. I tried using the other port or switching the input/output direction but saw the same symptom.The two cables both work fine when connecting the laptop and the monitor directly. What might be causing this?

I forgot to say that switching the input/output direction did not work either. However, this device was advertised to function both as "HDMI 2.0 Switcher 2 in 1 Out" and "HDMI Splitter 1 in 2 Out".
