HDMI to VGA adapter for envy

I have bought a HP Envy 1524, ordered a samsung 17 lcd flat screen (syncmaster 740B) not knowing there was no way to hook it up, I see post about adapters, will anyone work? Some say it won't work, some that I will not have a full screen.

HP website is not too user friendly. I will check with the supplier of the monitor but I know someone here knows what to do.

HDMI is a digital interface while VGA is analog. There is no native (cheap) adapter, you can buy very expensive adapters, but you're looking at 200-300 dollars usually.
