A friend is offering me right now to buy my EVGA reference card 780gtx, and pay me 350$ cash. On the other hand I have the opportunity to buy the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Graphics Card - 4GB GDDR5,ACX 2.0 Cooling for 550$. My card is used. The card i could buy is new.

Is this a smart move in your opinion? Or should I save my cash?

Solution
Get GTX 970 4GB VRAM . i wonder why your friend will pay $350 for GTX 780 . It s slower than GTX 970 and draws more power . Maybe , you mean 780 ti ?! GTX 980 is only 14% faster than GTX 970 . So GTX 970 is the best bang for the buck .
The 980 is a much much better card than the 780. Better performance, cooling and power consumption. The 980 is an incredibly capable card and the price is surprisingly low for what you get.

If you can afford the 980 then by all means go for it and leave the GTX 780- it is now quite an old card.

My resolution is 1080p. But I am beginning to think resolution isnt everything. Games are becoming more and more demanding too.

I totally agree with cooling and power consumption. But is the 980 gpu performance over the 780, worth the extra 200$ ?

I would say it isn't, but maybe a GTX 970 would make a lot of sense. You could buy one without shelling out a single dollar, get a little bit more performance, new features, a lot less power consumption and heat, and leave room for adding a second one in SLI later on.

My thinking is a 780 can max all games at 1080p 60hz and so will a 980. Yes the 980 will do it while working less but the end result wont be much different. I personally would wait until you see signs the 780 is struggling, by then there will probably be a newer generation than the 9xx series
