Heat issue Intel Core 2 duo E6600

I get idle temps. of about 50C with my Intel Core 2 duo E6600 processor. This is a real and not only a measurement problem since the computer sometimes reboots when under heavy load. I use the stock fan and applied arctic silver thermal paste before putting on the heat sink. The chassis fans work and the airflow through the computer seems fine.

How should I begin to troubleshoot this?

Also the stock HSF is tricky to fit right, make sure all four of the legs have been fully pressed down and snap into place. (they have a tendency to pop out as you move to the next one) And make sure that you are using coretemp or TAT for the temp readings. Have you enabled EISt and set portable leptop in the power settings, these will allow you to drop to 6x266=1600 Mhz under idle. I idle at 42 without EIST and 33 with EIST both at a very slow CPU fan speed of 1150rpm.

I have been using AS for my E6600. Followed AS's installation guide for core 2 duo and the performance is not that good. If you have another thermal grease, try it. Let me know if the temp improves.

Dont take it the wrong wat, but you wont find anything that will surpace AS5, not cost effectifly anyways. Like someone said, reseat the heatsink. Before you do, read the directions for it. I dont have a 6600 but i have a 6300 and mine iddles between 12 and 18 depending on temp on the house. I use a Thermaltake Blue Orb II, with AS5, also this temps are from Gigabyte Easy Tune software, so i believe they are taken from the CPU temp sensor.
