Question HELP - bought a GTX 1660 super, display doesn't work, now GTX 960 (old card) also doesn't show display, same as when I plug HDMI into the motherboard

Hi guys, I tried installing the MSI Ventus OC GTX 1660 super that I bought off marketplace, when I took out my old GTX 960 and installed the new card and put the power cables in, the new card will turn on (fans, etc) but my display shows no signal. Okay, so I tried plugging in my HDMI to my motherboard so I might be able to troubleshoot if its a driver issue. That doesn't work either.

So then I install my old 960 back in, but that doesn't show any signal either. I'm genuinely confused now. Please if anyone can help out with this it'd be greatly appreciated.

Did the individual you purchased the 1660 from demonstrate it working?

It is within possibility that something was wrong with that card that may have damaged the motherboard.

I think I would start by taking out the card, reset CMOS/BIOS and see if the display will come back to the motherboard output itself.
Do you happen to have access to another PC to try your old 960 in? I would be wary about trying the 1660 on another system lest it become damaged as well, at least my take on it.

He did not show it working... However I thought my old card would at least work on the PC?

How do I go about resetting CMOS/BIOS? I've never done it before.

I do not have another PC to plug the old 960 in... just the laptop that I'm typing on now :/

Did you remove the GTX 960 driver before you installed the GTX 1660.

When you boot with either card do you at least see bios activity on screen before it gets to where windows should load.

Are you sure your HDMI/ DP cable didn't come loose on monitor. Life happens.

Unplug from the wall. Hold down the power switch for 20 seconds than pull the coin looking battery from the motherboard. Pay attention so you don't break battery holder.

Leave out for 10 minutes .

After 10 minutes put battery back in, plug into wall and see if it boots.

I didn't remove the 960 driver before installing the 1660. After looking it up that's what I assumed was the initial issue, however I wasn't able to receive any signal to my monitor with either the old 960 card that worked perfectly fine a couple hours ago, and the HDMI from directly the motherboard.

When I boot with either card, I don't see any BIOS activity at all, my monitor will light up for a second (doesn't show anything it just detects that something is plugged in) and after 5 seconds says "no signal". My monitor is MSI Optix MAG321CQR

I checked both ends of the cables and they were both fine, I tried a different HDMI cable and the same thing happens.

I'm gonna try resetting the CMOS battery now, but once I reset it, should I boot with the old GTX 960? or HDMI directly from the motherboard? Thanks

Also don't freak if on booting it still shows black screen. Just hold down the power switch to shut down computer than restart it.

It's kind of like computer knows it has an issue so on next boot it compensates and coughs through.

I've tried both of what you and punkncat have told me to do (resetting the CMOS battery, restarting if greeted with another black screen) and i'm still getting no signal. Both of my gpu's are not connected and the HDMI is only connected to the motherboard yet still nothing.

Is there ANYTHING else that could save my PC at this point, I literally cannot believe buying this 1660 super screwed up my entire PC to the point nothing works anymore. The fans still run and the computer sounds normal just nothing shows up on display anymore, at this point idk what I could do.

I reconnected my GTX 960 and turned the PC on, the fans on the old GPU will run for a couple seconds after turning it on, but then stop completely.

First and foremost DON'T freak and start pulling this or that to find the fix. Yes that's most likely where were heading but be smart and don't compound the issued.

We all do it forgetting but your making sure your plugging in the PCI-E power cable to GPU.

First can you unplug your monitor from the wall/ and HDMI and hold down it's power switch for 10 seconds and try to retest.

Un plug hard drives, anything USB not the mouse or keyboard. Is there anything you could have bumped doing your install'

I have plugged in the PCI-E power cable to the GPU. it has the 6 pin connector but also the +2 pin connector but the gtx 960 only required the 6 pin, so I only plugged that in.

I've tried unplugging the monitor from the wall/HDMI and holding down the power, yet still nothing

That being said I may have accidently touched the RAM? I did take it out and put it back in while installing but I double checked it and it looked properly installed to me

OKAY so I finally figured it out, it WAS the RAM stick that was loose, I didn't stick it back inside hard enough (thought I'd break it) but after hearing a final click, I started it up and works perfectly again. This is with my old GPU so hopefully the GTX 1660 super works fine in here as well. Thank you again punkncat and stonecarver for the help so far!
