Sorry if this is in the wrong place but...
I really want to buy Garry's Mod, but it apparently needs a source game to run. I've heard that the best sources are Half-Life 2 and Counterstrike: Source, but I'm not sure what the difference between them is. I'm not interested in playing either game by itself, I just want the one that will give better Garry's Mod performance for its price. Which one do you think I should get?

Solution
I'm like 90% sure they updated the game so that you don't need any additional games, but I could be wrong.

My very first purchase on Steam was the Garry's Mod and CS:S bundle they had which was over 3 years ago. Dunno if its still available, but back then those were the only two games I had and Gmod worked like a charm. TF2 is free to play so if you don't have that downloaded already you might as well go ahead, its free and a ton of fun. The reason people tell you to purchase CSS is because if you don't, you will get a lot of "Errors" when trying to load props etc etc. I believe there are even items on the workshop that give you all of the CSS textures free of charge, although I'm not sure if those have been removed or not.

It does not need to have a seperate source-based game, however, it does run on the source engine. If you but and download it off of Steam and it does not work (as perhaps I could be wrong despite my personal experience with GMod), then Team Fortress 2 is a good source based game that requires no penny to be paid unless your P2W and throw your money away on microtransactions so you can getstuff you earn randomly in-game over time instantly instead.... I think GMod has included its own copy of source engine in its game files since it went up for $9.99 on Steam when GMod 10 was released (in 2010) I don't know what aged source you got that from and if you're going to buy it buy it on the Steam client ONLY, as it is sold exclusively on Steam and shouldn't be found anywhere else in the first place. Personally the only games I've ever bought are The Forest and GMod, as I am too low-income to buy anh more games and I'm satisfied with the BF3 I got on an origin OTH deal and all my ftp games. Not saying I don't WANT those games like rust, dayz, and AC:U etc. but I do not have money to get them with. Besides I feel like I need to focus on hardware more anyway before even TRYING to play those games. I recently got a DeathAdder Chroma with pocket change and when ever I get about ~$140 I'm getting me a razer BlackWdiw Chroma if I don't find a really good replacement for my monitor in the same or lower price range.
