i got fairly low 3d mark scores for my specs, ive put a lot of money into my system so im concerned that something is not working correctly and needs to be RMA. Please help
My results : http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5500138

is my cpu or GPU the issue? My specs;
GTX 970
600W CX PSU
16GB DDR3 RAM
2TB HDD
120GB SSD
Gigabyte GA990FXA Ud3 Motherboard (3.0 revision)
FX8350 CPU

I know it is, but this build started as a budget build($600). At the time I went for an fx6300 for a cpu as it was more powerful then the i3 and cost less. i wasnt thinking about the future at that time. I had to get a new cpu and I got the FX8350 as i cant get another mobo at this moment

I tried the 3dmark fire strike bench and scored 8989 all at stock speeds. that is still over 300 points higher than your score.

and I have the reference Gtx 970 that boosts to 1240mhz which im sure is clocked lower than yours.

Myself I'm running an fx 8120 at 4.2ghz, stock was 3.1ghz. With my 7950 it plays pretty smooth. Op, on that 8350, especially if you've got water cooling why don't you bump up your multiplier in the bios a little and overclock it. You've got a decent board. I bet that would make you feel better about the performance.

There's a quick thread from another forum where people are getting 4.6 and 4.7ghz out of their 8350s with your board. You have an unlocked multiplier. I should not have been harsh, but you should have an idea what budget you are at and how it performs. And they really aren't bad chips for what you pay.

But that help a little.

I'm worried about over clocking. Never have done it

But to give an idea, I've got an fx 8120, which is the generation before yours, and a step down. My cpu was stock speed 3.1ghz, but I clocked it to 4.2ghz. Been running over a year that way. So i basically get the performance from my cpu that you get from yours but mine was a cheaper part. As long as you can keep things relatively cool you should not have to worry about getting anything as these cpu's are made to overclock. Just make sure everything stays cool and that you've got good airflow. Also there are other ways to do it but that guide seems ok.

Sorry Robby, You seem like a nice guy and I was extremely angry with the performance I was getting with the 970 and the 8350 not to mention My ASRock Fatal1ty 990fx Killer Mobo was randomly freezing maybe 3 times a day. So when I tried overclocking and running Prime 95 to test stability It would also FREEZE. It pissed me off beyond belief LOL. So I don't know what overclocking will do performance wise for you. Luckily Newegg agreed to take back the Board and gave me STORE CREDIT for the processor. So I got the i5 4690k and boy does it run smooth compared to what I had so now I'm happy.

I hope you can get the performance you believe you paid for. I hope you can overclock that chip to a screaming 5ghz!! heck some people can. I just was not one of them. God bless you! and good luck and happy gaming!

as long as you have good cooling you can put up to 1.5 volts on that CPU. But the name of the game is to keep the voltage as low as possible while running your overclock (stable) the higher the voltage the hotter the CPU will run. And I believe 62c on the core temp is as high as you want to go. and 72 or 75 on the socket temp.

I know myself I didn't get 5ghz out of my cpu, but on the video he shows a high voltage that i would not want to run. You may want to post over in the overclocking section and that may help. I5 is a fine processor, but for what you pay the 8350 is not as terrible as people say. I've built 2-3 gaming systems with 8350s for others and they always seem happy with it.

I might go your way. AMD has failed me everytime Ive used them. AMD is only good for $600 and under budget building in my opinion now. My MOBO is stable but I dont like to over clock as I like a very cool running system

right on. yeah im running everything at stock myself. I also believe overclocking is overrated. LOL

did you buy the CPU recently? and did you purchase it from newegg? If so call them and tell them its not performing properly or something along that line. They will say to you they can only send you another processor of the same type. Then say hmmmmm well at this point if I'm having to send it back to you guys I really just want to go with an Intel option. They will put you on hold at this point. They will get back on the phone and say ok there is a 15% restocking fee and we can only give you store credit. That's when you say " I'll TAKE IT! " LOL.

Ok, wow. Cool running system. Really? Wish I knew how to post a picture on here. But my FX 8120 running at 4.2ghz(stock is 3.1) is right now reporting in HWMonitor running the following temps currently.

Tmpin0-23 degrees Celcius
Tmpin1-23 degrees Celcius
Tmpin2-20 degrees Celcius

Package temps for the FX 8120--reporting 9 degrees Celcius. I confirmed this using another program called Open Hardware Monitor, which states that this is the core temperatures. Keep in mind this is under AIR cooling.

I'm actually running Intel Burn Test on this. Been a while anyway. It's doing it as I'm typing. Under full load, it's reporting Tmpin1 sensor, or the CPU socket for this board, currently 37 degrees Celcius, highest value 40 degrees Celcius. The cores right now are 42 degrees Celcius under full load after 8 out of 10 passes. Keep in mind I'm running a notch or so above stock voltage as well, and I'm running on air cooling.

Intel does make fine chips, no 2 ways about it, but don't be like oh AMD equipment is garbage if you really have no clue what you are saying. Too many fanboys.

*Edit* Just finished the 10 pass run. Highest socket temp was 41. Highest core temp was 43.1. These chips are safe up to 62.

Air cooling here, running 4 case fans. 1 on top pulling in, one in front pulling in, 1 on side pulling in, 1 exhaust on back pulling air out. Cooler is a Cooler Master V6 GT.

For reference, this is my cpu cooler.

If I've been a little annoyed I apologize. Just get a little irritated when people are not well informed and make a blanket statement like AMD is junk when they don't even really give it a chance. I digress. It's your money. If you want an intel system, I hope it does what you want it to do and that it serves you well(though if you post back saying how your intel isn't performing well, forgive me if I would chuckle):na:

AMD is good but does run it to Lag or stutter in many titles gaming. and also drops more frames and has lower minimum frame rates in games. the minimum frame rates is where it really counts! that's where your gonna see the lags/stutter. Intel keeps a more solid frame rate and gets way higher minimums hence smoother gameplay.

Also Intel is not hit or miss on titles you can and can't play like AMD! with Intel you pick any game and it is always gonna be playable. Let alone the bad ports they make all the time Intel will perform better on those as well!

I had a phenom ii X6 and an 8350! I know what both have to offer and since the switch I will never look back!!!
That is how much it opened my eyes to the whole thing! way smoother and no need to play with settings!

I am an amd fan admittedly. I do admit Intel is better, but I don't care for their pricing either. I would rather put the money saved into other parts of my system plus something about using things that not everyone else does.

Making the Intel move has crossed my mind, then i look at prices and say no. I will say though rumors are new fx chips are coming out in 2016 so I'm interested to see what they have to offer there if true. I would like to see at least ivy bridge/haswell performance even if Intel is still in the lead. If not i may consider the move to Intel. I've been using amd cpus since the amd k6 if anyone remembers that lol.

Not to say I've never used Intel. The Dell i use at work has an i7 2600k. Can't say I'm overly impressed though. It's a good system but does not feel faster in day to day at least. I'm sure my boss would take exception to me gaming on it lol.

Lmao! you should bring a GPU to work and plap that computer on the desk and Just go to town! that would be hilarious!

I think amd is done making the FX series. I think they are only doing APUs now

Maybe they will, but I will be buying Intel for now on anyway

That's fine. See if you still say that if they eventually get a better performing cpu. A few years ago when the pentium 4 was out they actually did have faster chips when the athlon 64 series first came out.

As I said op, if you are going to spend money you really need to research and see if what you are buying does what you want instead of just buying something, getting buyer's remorse and crying about it. If you would have researched you'd have known Intel is better but that the amd is still good enough most of the time for gaming. You seemed like you stated the system on a budget and on a budget the amd systems do just fine.

I'm not disputing with you that Intel cpus have better performance in some things like single core performance for example. But if you are going to play computer tech you need to research and have some idea how things are going to perform instead of just buying parts blindly.

I'm an amd fan, I admit that. But you've also made a few blanket statements like "i want a cool running system" so you cite that as a reason to not overclock. Case in point, overclocking is reasonably safe if you do your research and have an idea what you are doing. I posted my temps above. What are the load temps for the 4690k? One site I saw said it got up to 79 degrees Celsius. Sounds warm to me.

Anyway, not going to argue with you, i hope you enjoy your system. But for future reference don't make blanket statements if you really don't know what you are talking about.

the highest my cpu gets is 40 celcius under full load. Which in my opinion is very cool. I did do research but I guess I did lack a little, I say I will never get AMD again because I've had an FX6300 die a year into its life and they have gone more toward apus. Same goes with AMD GPUS, nothing but problems for me. Thats why I went with Nvidia and not the 290. But yes you are right. It kind of is my fault
