Hey,
I just upgraded my computer today because of some problems I was having with my GPU and upon upgrading I fell upon a serious problem that wont let me boot (explained in detail below). I used to have 2gb of Corsair Dominator on an ASUS Striker Extreme Motherboard with a ASUS 8800GTX GPU. I was also using a Coolmaster 850W PSU.
The problem I was having was caused by my card so I decided to replace it and while I was at it upgrade to 4gb of ram and get a new PSU (since at the time I wasent sure if it was the PSU or the GPU that was causing my problem). I decided to buy a PC Power&cooling power supply (750W SLI certified), a BFG 280GTX OC GPU and 4gb of G.Skill ram.
I tried to install the PSU on my own but since I had never done it before I took my old one out, got stuck (and was also afraid of frying or screwing anything up) so I waited for a friend of mine to come and do it for me. Friend came today, set everything up for me (New PSU, new GPU and new RAM). Came time to see if it would work... We plugged everything in and hit the power button... The computer started but immediately shut itself off after about a second. I heard no beeps, no sounds and the motherboard LCD screen posted no errors. We tried taking out the GPU and putting my old one in... Same thing happened, computer started up for about a second an then shut itself down. Then we tried taking out the new ram and putting old in, problem persisted. We then tried hooking up my old PSU in and tried powering it up problem persisted (Note, my old PSU and GPU worked I just couldnt play games as I think my GPU was dying on me though I had NO problems starting up or in Windows). We checked the connections, rechecked them, made sure that the PSU didnt have an ampage meter to chage the voltage/current... Finally we figured that the PSU had been defective and might have fried my motherboard or maybe worse. I don't know what to do about this!! Can anyone help?! Has anyone had this happen to them before? To recap my motherboard lights up when plugged in, ethernet is detected (and glows as usual), my keyboard lights light up, the LCD screen on my motherboard light up. Please help if you have any experience in this domain.
Thanks!!
Edit: We where VERY careful about frying anything, friend used anti static bracelet and we where cautious not to touch parts directly. Not saying it couldn't have happened, but we where being careful.
