I have a Maxtor 30 gig 7200 rpm ata/100 HD
Can I use this on my ancient intel 440VX until I finally get my new mobo? Just use the cables i have in my system now?
This 2.5 gig drive is screaming to be tossed in the used hardware heap.

Yes you can!
The cable must be the older one though, not the 80 pin !

You should check Maxtor site to clear things up!

You might also need a BIOS update to recognize the full size of the drive.
