Help upgrading to better CPU for gaming

Hello! I've looked forward to the release of Diablo 3 for some time now, but came to realize my CPU just wasn't going to cut it. 🙁
I am trying to find a CPU that will work with my current motherboard for under 300 dollars. But I am not super tech savvy and could use some help before I purchase one from Newegg.com.

Here is my specs:

CPU Type: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E5500 @ 2.55GHz
CPU Speed: 2.55 GHz
System Memory: 5888 Megabytes
Video Card Model: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450
Video Card Memory: 1 gb
Video Card Driver: nvd3dum.dll
Desktop Resolution: 1920x1080
Hard Disk Size: 600 GB

I found a Intel Pentium E6600 Wolfdale 3.06GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core on Newegg.com, but am unsure if its the best I could do in terms of running Diablo 3 lag free. The pricing is nice though :).

I'd be tempted to just slum it on lowest settings for a while until I could afford a proper upgrade. I can't imagine it will be long before you find the Wolfdale too slow as well.

I agree... Trying to upgrade a dinosaur is generally pointless. You're upgrading one old generation dual core to a not-as-old dual core. Its a waste. If you did anything, you could invest in a better video card, one thats probably not going to see its full potential on the older system but could be moved to the new system. If you'll have the funds for a new build in less than a year, I say go for it. Something powerful like the upcoming GTX 670.

+1 just soldier on until you can afford to do the motherboard and CPU to something more current. Though to be honest I'm pretty sure around the $300 mark you could get a cheaper 1155 motherboard and an i3 (or maybe i5)

And thanks for the shopping list wr6133, thats pretty much perfect. Hopefully I can just re use the 6gb of DDR3 ram ive got 😀.
