Guys I need help, I recently get a asus a7n8x-x and a athlon 3000+, when booting my computer tells me its a athlon 2600+, in bios I can change multplier settings and can change the FSB, however when trying to run the CPU is 166mhz FSB the computer wont boot and post whines about speed set improperly, I am using pc2700 ram, what is wrong?!

I'm guessing a little, but just to be safe....
I also have an A7N8X board and remember seeing a jumper on the board for two different FSB settings. (ie. 100/133 & 166/200 or something like that. Maybe it was 133/166 & 166/200)

You might want to open up the manual and poke around for that FSB setting on the board and check it.

Also, which 3000+ did you get? The 166Mhz(333)FSB, or the 200Mhz (400) model?

There are 2 2600's it might be thinking it sees:
the 133MHz FSB w/ Multiplier of 16.
&
the 166MHz FSB 2/ Multiplier of 12.5.

What is the multiplier set at when you try 166Mhz FSB??

There's also a "clear CMOS" jumper in there that you may want to do. It would erase any modded BIOS settings to let you start over easily.

Unfortunately, I've never seen the "speed improperly set" error. 🙁
Sorry dude.

I actually believe that the company sent me an Athlon 2600+, when i set the FSB to 100 it tells me I have a Athlon 1500, then at 133 tells me I have an Athlon 2600, yet when setting it to 166 it refuses to boot. How can i tell which processor i really have?

damn good question wusy.

Herder, I believe you need to take off the fan and heatsink (HSF) and literally look at the code on the chip, write it down, then you or someone can look it up.

I thought that a program like WCPUID would tell you but it doesn't.

Ok wow, I finally fixed it, im using pc2700 cause i have the 333fsb version of the 3000+, apprantly I botched up overclocking the CPU which resulted in very strange results, after fixing it it runs at its normal clocked speed. Thanks for the replys guys, I appreciate it. BTW How hard is it to blow the bridges with a 9v battery?
