sorry if this is in the wrong thread, new here. but i got a problem.

little while back i bought new components for my computer. no one told me the heatsink\fans combos that came with a retail cpu were crap. so i put one on that came with my 3.2 p4.

everythings fine until the computer starts shutting off randomly. doesnt do it alot, but still. so i download some kind of tempature monitor that monitors the cpu\case etc temps. case is fine, but the cpu temp was at 177 degrees fahrenheit. after i asked a few people if thats bad, they said my cpu should be melted by now.

so i buy a new heatsink and a fan to match. i bought this from newgg
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=35-109-114&DEPA=1
from what i read, its a badass heatsink. i put a 80mm case fan ontop of it, which is recommended.

so anyways, i install the heatsink and fan ezily. but the program says my cpu is running at 150-160 degrees fehr. thats still bad. if i leave it at this, more holes will come.

there 4 case fans running, theres nothing wrong with the install, what else can i do?

i know i can a replacement cpu thro warrenty, and ill look into it to see if i apply. but what else can i do?

thx,
brandon

Really retail heatsinks aren't that bad. Which ThermalRight heatsink did you get? Did you get one with the heat pipes? Generally everyone speaks very highly of the thermalright products. Did you properly apply thermal grease? What kind of 80mm fan did you put on top of it?

177 degrees is without a doubt way to hot. I don't know about melted, but you aren't to far from it.

Do you have the latest BIOS update, some manufacturers have had problems with the temps reading incorrectly?

What about your heatsink, does it feel warm to the touch? Does it "feel like" 177° F?

well, i have since changed from the retail hsf to the thermalright hs. the hs should be there if u follow the link i provided. the 80mm on top of it is a panasonic panaflo.

ive never applied thermal glue\grease\whatever. i put about, the size of a grain of rice on both the cpu and bottom of the hs.. if anything, i put a little more than that. it was the thermal that came with the hs.

i had to update bios when i got the new mobo. its a gigabyte 8IK1100 rev.2, or something like that. i had to update the bios bc it saw my 3.2 as a 2.8. so i updated and it saw a 3.2

btw, i forgot to post, tehres already a small hole in the cpu. its about the size of the tip on an ink pen. its located near the corner that alcks the pin in the corner. if that makes sense =\

edit: rebooted and now the cpu tempature is back up to 170 fehr. im starting to think more and more this is a problem with the cpu.

Wasn't the link before just a picture? Anyways, you only really need to put a small dab of thermal grease on the CPU, with this stuff, less is more. You can actually get to much on there and it can cause temp problems. You don't really need to put any on the heatsink.

As far as the small hole, I am a little confused, but something doesn't sound right? Do you happen to have a picture of it?

I take it the whole you are talking about is not present in this picture?

edit: the link is right to the product. if it isnt, its a Thermalright SLK-948U

thx a lot btw

Modern heatsink compounds are so thin that modern high-pressure clips prevent a buildup of paste that's "too thick". So putting too much on simply means some squirts out the side.

The hole in the heatshield is supposed to be there. Don't worry about it.

You could have lots of fans going but you could have a heat dam.

A heat dam is when air gets trapped in the case and does not move or the air behind the MoB traps a thin layer of super heated air that gives false readings to the thermisters.

Try a smoke test and see if it moves in and out of the case in a proper flow. If you think the back of the main board is getting to hot try to get a small fan to blow into or draw air out from between the side panel and main board.

Failing all that drill some freaking holes into some of the sheet metal on the board side so the heat can get out. of course remove the main board first

If you are still overheating check your thermal paste again and fan speeds on the CPU. Also check that your Power supply is at least 450 Watts or greater.

You have just void your warranty, switching Intel stock heatsink with 3rd party voids the warranty.

Make sure the 4 case fans are blowing air OUT of the case and not into the case.

That's it, duffus! What are you going to do, report him to the Intel Police?

I saved my retail heatsink from AMD just in case, as its got the serial number from my chip on it. Hasn't ever been installed, have to put it on there for a split second if I ever return it.

I guess they might be a little suspcious when they get a 1 year old CPU, and a heatsink that is brandnew, but they can't prove anything!

I know about AMD's requirements, but I don't think Intel follows the same rules.

If that's the copper bottomed 3.2 Intel heatsink it's a keeper. I like to lap them and use AS-5. I have a GIANT Zalman flower 7000 on here now. The Zalman does not beat the copper-bottomed Intel by 1C! It is a lot quieter though.

Ok, let's see if I can help out here. First off, that little hole in the CPU heatspreader? It's a vent, so it's supposed to be there, but it's not supposed to be covered with compound. Covered by the heatsink is inevitable, but don't get any goop in there. That said, download Motherboard Monitor from here if you don't already have it. If you already have it, uninstall it along with any other mobo monitor program you have. Then install it MBM5. Make sure you do the update thingy during the install and double check you choose the correct motherboard. Many motherboards from one company may have similar names and it's easy to choose the wrong board from the list. If you do all that, and you're still getting crazy temps, I recommend the following:

1) check your fans. you have 4, so most likely you have them in the front, the side, the back, or the top. Regardless of where you have them exactly, fans in the front and side should suck air IN, and fans in the top and back should blow air OUT. That is the proper way to place your fans. If your fans aren't facing in these directions, switch them so they are.

2) Get yourself some Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Silver Ceramique (my personal preference).

3) Clean off your heatsink with Goof Off. Q-tips, paper towels, or coffee filters work great. Once all the compound is off, clean it thoroughly with Rubbing alcohol. Do the same with the CPU heatspreader (the thing with the hole in the corner).

4) Once they're both clean, follow these directions depending on which compound you buy. And, yes, you should rub compound into the heatsink and then wipe it off (like it says in the directions) because it fills the microscopic valleys in the HS and creates a complete contact with the CPU heatspreader.

5) Put everything back together and turn your computer on and post your results. Good luck!

Trust me on all of that. I have a Swiftech heatsink (with AS Ceramique) and a 92mm fan on it. I have 5 case fans (4 X 80, 1 X 120) set up like I mentioned above. The fans are running at minimum speeds on a 4-fan controller = nice and quiet.

That all said, I have a 2.6c running at 3.25Ghz. My room temp is 75F (24C) and here are my computer temps:

CPU - 27C idle, 41C load
Mobo - 29C idle, 32 load.

The Swiftechs are great heatsinks. How noisy is it?

The Ceramique is great too. Gonna use it on my NV5 VGA Silencer for my 6800 as well. The swiftech is pretty quiet because the air goes around cylinders, as opposed to fins, so there's less friction/air blockage. Then again, I pulled that theory out of my ass. Seriously though, it's not bad at all. My 6800's stock HSF is the loudest thing in my case.
