LOL - after the Republican candidate Brown took Kennedy's Senate seat, and now that AMD is selling off it's remaining share of GF, I wonder if Democrat Cuomo may decide to lie low for a few years 😛. Looks pretty bad to the NY taxpayers to be footing a $1.4B payment to the Middle East, without even the AMD strawman putting in an appearance, plus footing the legal bill in an already-settled dispute just so some spotlight-seeking politician can get his name in the news.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see a Congressional inquiry into the FTC approving a massive technology transfer to the UAE, after being hoodwinked by AMD pretending to be an equal voting rights partner in the GF deal, to circumvent the laws regulating same.

Dems reeling, soul-searching after Mass. loss
Brown rode a wave of voter anger to defeat Democrat Martha Coakley

BOSTON - Republican Scott Brown, fresh from a stunning Massachusetts Senate victory that shook the power balance on Capitol Hill, declared Wednesday that his election had sent a "very powerful message" that voters are weary of backroom deals and Washington business-as-usual.

From MSNBC.

So, the people have spoken. Having done some work in Mass. , this is astounding, as the Dems were the religion, and the Kennedys the chosen family. I think we need to just give more money to the unions and say forget it all heheh

LOL - quite true. Since the Northeast has one of the highest state tax rates (esp. New York), I take this as a sign that the voters are fed up with both federal and state deficit spending. Although I haven't read any articles about the GF deal, there are some fanbois in other forums who were quite upset to hear about their tax dollars subsidizing what will soon be an entirely foreign-owned company.

IMO, the health care 'reform' bill is an atrocious mishmash of pork-barrel spending, esp. with Arizona or NM or whatever state getting a medicare-tax-free proviso written in for their citizens. So now the other 49 states are responsible for picking up that state's share??? I don't think so! :fou:

yea fazers... i had never seen a bribe so open and public as that one. we know it happens there every minute of every day but that was pretty brazen and arrogant.

It was Nebraska, not AZ or NM. I have to say the winner of the "most impressive bribe" contest was in exempting Unions from the "Cadillac plan" tax.

I agree with JDJ, though. I suspect there are many Democrats in the House and Senate that are thrilled they don't have to vote for it.

i wasnt aware of that archibael. i figured since they are the dominant group holding cadillac healthcare, they would get hit the worst. i should have known better..

See:

http://meganmcardle.theatlantic.com/archives/2010/01/special_deal_for_labor_unions.php

Especially see Update II at the bottom.

The press covered it for like a day and then shut up about it, referring to it in the past tense as "the successful compromise with organized labor regarding so-called 'Cadillac' health care plans".

The minute Brown got in he started talking pro dem health care bill, the guy is a shill.

Seems AMD's M.O. is to just make baseless complaints against it's rivals.

Nvidia Responds to AMD's Claim of PhysX Failure
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-physx-amd-gpu-multicore,9481.html

AMD accuses Nvidia of disabling multi-core CPU support in PhysX API -- Nvidia says it's untrue.

With PhysX being an Nvidia property, there are obvious reasons why AMD wouldn't be first in line to sing the praises of that specific proprietary physics technology.

Earlier this month, AMD worldwide developer relations manager Richard Huddy said in an interview with Bit-tech that Nvidia is squandering away CPU resources.

"The other thing is that all these CPU cores we have are underutilised and I'm going to take another pop at Nvidia here. When they bought Ageia, they had a fairly respectable multicore implementation of PhysX. If you look at it now it basically runs predominantly on one, or at most, two cores," said Huddy. "It's the same thing as Intel's old compiler tricks that it used to do; Nvidia simply takes out all the multicore optimisations in PhysX. In fact, if coded well, the CPU can tackle most of the physics situations presented to it."

We asked Nvidia for its response to the allegations made by AMD, Nadeem Mohammad, PhysX director of product management, stepped up to the mic in hopes of setting the record straight:

I have been a member of the PhysX team, first with AEGIA, and then with Nvidia, and I can honestly say that since the merger with Nvidia there have been no changes to the SDK code which purposely reduces the software performance of PhysX or its use of CPU multi-cores.

Our PhysX SDK API is designed such that thread control is done explicitly by the application developer, not by the SDK functions themselves. One of the best examples is 3DMarkVantage which can use 12 threads while running in software-only PhysX. This can easily be tested by anyone with a multi-core CPU system and a PhysX-capable GeForce GPU. This level of multi-core support and programming methodology has not changed since day one. And to anticipate another ridiculous claim, it would be nonsense to say we “tuned” PhysX multi-core support for this case.

PhysX is a cross platform solution. Our SDKs and tools are available for the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, the PC and even the iPhone through one of our partners. We continue to invest substantial resources into improving PhysX support on ALL platforms--not just for those supporting GPU acceleration.

As is par for the course, this is yet another completely unsubstantiated accusation made by an employee of one of our competitors. I am writing here to address it directly and call it for what it is, completely false. Nvidia PhysX fully supports multi-core CPUs and multithreaded applications, period. Our developer tools allow developers to design their use of PhysX in PC games to take full advantage of multi-core CPUs and to fully use the multithreaded capabilities.

Oh wasn't it you?

Ok then some other sap ran it through the gpu forum and the people there *Who actually know* what it's all about decided that the Nvidia spokesperson was, once again, talking shite.

Do you really believe everything you read btw? Underlining Nvidia spokesperson propaganda somehow makes it more believable?

If you knew *anything* about gpu's you'd know that this is pure Nvidia spin. Fact is, you don't know anything about *anything* and are a complete waste of forum space.

I like Pres. Obama as a person, but I think he shouldda taken the Dems into the back room and unloaded on them. The bill and the entire process of making it (sorta like sausage - you don't wanna see how it's done) has left a huge stink in a lot of people's noses, and they aren't bashful about speaking & voting their minds. Weren't the Dems paying attention when all the angry protestors spewed their views last fall?? Why is it most politicians only develop a feeble amount of common sense when it looks like their re-election gravy train might come to a crashing halt??

C'mon now Jenny, stop projecting.

You are just all hormonal because AMD made yet another loss(when one takes out the Intel money), in the same QTR Intel's gross margins hit 65%.

And you get butthurt from being banned and wonder why you get banned :heink: Why is it that people talking about things they have no control over pour derision on each other as if there isnt a living breathing huiman on the other end. May as well applaud the Israeli siege on gaza and applaud the sniping of gazan school children in classrooms.

Same mentality. Blame it on one too many digested paradigms from the CFR elite media and one too many FPS games and a bad upbringing by unstable parents and top it off with a general disregard for personal evolution on a functionally humane platform.

Stuff like this makes the Internet suck because every one is treating each other like Israel treats palestinians. It isnt anoblication, as I have said before, its a choice that reveals intent and character.

Well I had a 1/50 chance of getting it right without looking up the facts 😀.

And yeah I agree that the union proviso is yet another black eye in the whole process. Apparently the 'common good' idea has degenerated into 'what's in it for me?'.

And I'm not saying a Republican Congress would have done much better if they were the ones in power. But I don't see any Republican presidents attempting to crowbar this through Congress either. You would think Obama couldda called up his buddies Bill & Hillary Clinton and asked them what happened when they tried it 16 years ago...

I agree, I have always shopped AMD CPU's and never had a problem with their "Low quality" and they remain reliable to me. The only time I had an Intel I was completely dissatisfied with how it performed overall.

I will stand by AMD forever
:bounce:

Pretty sure AMD made a healthy profit, and for the entire year too :)

Advanced Technology Investment Company plans to acquire share of Advanced Micro Devices in Globalfoundries, a contract semiconductor manufacturing joint venture between the two companies. The move will potentially allow ATIC to oust AMD members from Globalfoundries’ board of directors and concentrate strategic and operational decision making at its hands.

"This action is simply consistent with the long-announced plan for AMD to gradually become fab-less, which was one of the key strategies behind the creation of Globalfoundries," an official statement from ATIC that is quoted by Reuters news-agency reads.

Executives at both AMD and Globalfoundries have been claiming that the former would gradually reduce its stake in the latter, so the information does not come at a surprise.

Originally, ATIC owned 65.8% stake in Globalfoundries and invested roughly $2.1 billion, whereas AMD owned 34.2% stake worth around $700 million. Recently ATIC acquired Chartered Semiconductor for $3.9 billion and merged its operations with Globalfoundries. As a result, AMD’s share is already much lower than 34.2%, but the company continues to hold 5 seats in the board of directors, helping to make strategic decisions. Acquisition of AMD’s stake will allow Globalfoundries to centralize its decision making.

Terms of the potential deal have not been disclosed so far. It is known that proceedings from the potential transaction will help AMD financially and will further strengthen the company’s chip design efforts.

Transmeta downgrade here we come

I really dont see being fabless s a posotive here, may as well just buy Intel from now on and help AMD commit suicide.

For the full year, AMD's net income was $304-million and revenue was $5.4-billion. In 2008, AMD had a net loss of $3.1-billion and revenue of $5.8-billion.

If you want to compare those figures vs intel y/y, be my guest. And no, that doesn't include the intel settlement :)

Yes it does include the Intel settlement.
