Herb madness

I need some help creating a stable, self-perpetuating herb pattern. I
tried following the guidebook but my herb garden doesn't seeem to want
to grow as it should.

I have a 2x2 square:

""
""

1 square south and east of the northwest corner of the room.

Nothing happens to it, no matter how long I wait. If I pick a patch
clean, that leaves an vacant spot with 3 adjascent bushes, which
should supposedly fill in the next generation. But it doesn't. I've
waited many days and nothing happens.

This is in the pacified big room if that is relevent. Can anyone help?

Spoily?

Are you sure you picked it clean? If the pattern is like this:
""
""

And you pick one clean...

""
"

And press W5 perhaps several times. It should regrow.. make sure
ther're no bushes near the pattern.. (all others then the 4 must be at
least 2 spaces away)... It should work.
This way will not work: This way will:
"... ".."".
.."". ..""."
..""".

If this doesn't work, can you make a screenshot and post it?
(There is a game command for making screenshots, but I don't recall it
off-hand. You might have to look it up in the key bindings).

It's [ , and the screenshot is written to <charactername>.ssh in your
ADOM folder.

Ok, I subsequently discovered what the problem was. I'd picked the
entire level clean beforehand. I didn't realise at the time that this
would stop herb regrowth.

....says the guy who only has a first name? 🙂

But I agree that I prefer reading the actual name of the people I'm
conversing with. Why did you switch to the pseudonym, Frances?

Lack of attention, really.

Being currently un-employed, I'm reading Usenet from home. Since I have
a slower connection, NCF is less practical; and since all my e-mail goes
to my torrain@sympatico.ca address, I generally read Usenet from Outlook
Express[1], and respond from there, so unless I remember to switch it
out (as I have tried to do with this post), you get my Torrain screen
name.

As to why the pseudonym; I like the word 'torrain', so I picked it up as
an e-mail address when I got my Sympatico account lo these many years
ago. Since I rarely used it, and only then to talk to people who
already knew who I was, the pseudonymity never really occured to me; I
knew who I was, they knew who I was, and I never bothered to change it.

Love and coffee,
Frances

It doesn't necessarily -- this depends on how you create new herbs, and
is generally considered a bug.

I think he means that he completely picked out all of the herns on the
level and expected them to regrown without him doing anything else.

Nah, he was specifically talking about having created a 2x2 patch. Check

Or maybe I'm missing something.
