high cpu temps

Hi and thanks in advanced

I have an i7 4790k and a Corsair H80I cpu cooler. I disconnected it before and applied an adequate coating of thermal paste(Coolermaster E1) and connected it all back up.

while idle I'm having temps of minimum 57 and max temps of 64 but when I launch a game these temps sky rocket in to the high 80s and sometimes 100.

iv reseated the cpu cooler and the cpu
iv disconnected everything and connected it all back up
iv applied and cleaned thermal paste.
iv also tried removing any cpu overclock iv had


however I do have bad ram which will be getting RMA later this week but would that cause false cpu temperature readings?

please can anyone help?

what are temps like underload

just played a round of Overwatch I had temps of around 73-75 on average plus I have the side panel of while I'm using corsair link.

you can create a curve or use the presets in corsair link. i personally use the quiestest one, and still stay below 50 c under load in a game.
if it is spinning at full speed and trying to cool but it isn't, then to me the aio cooler must have been damaged while you were making adjustments to your cpu, that or it is not securely tightened to the cpu. it may need to be RMA'd. corsair isnt too bad about this kind of thing.

I'm hoping it is the ram tbh. I have a fan here and have a bit of room to install on the grill of the cooler but for some reason I haven't got enough screws that are long enough

Still waiting for the new ram but im having the pc shut down and restart displaying a message about asus power surge and that one was detected was this caused by the bad ram? I also have a power surge protector.

That may be so. RAM can cause so many errors, are you able to access the BIOS or is that not possible?

can you make sure all ram dimms are correctly identfied within the bios. And measure the temps of whatever you can in that.

iv fixed it. I completely taken apart the pc and reset all fans and cooler applied thermal paste yet again and got the temps down. to mid 20s while idle

iv also sent the trident x off for the rma.
