Hi all,

I have been looking at getting a homeplug kit, obviously one goes into my router, the other will go somewhere in the house. Is it alright to plug in a wireless access point on the other end to extend my wireless range? I live in quite a long house (converted farm house) and the wireless reaches as far as the kitchen (maybe just over halfway the length of the house. So i am wanting to extend the range, will this be a feasible method of doing so, or are access points not compatible with homeplug extensions?

Also, will homeplug setups work if the two homeplugs are on separate power rings?

Thanks.

Not familiar with the powerline networking products, but if you'll only be using wireless networking devices, I would look into a wireless range extender, sometimes called a wireless bridge. This takes your existing wireless signal and re-broadcasts it extending the coverage fairly seamlessly.

Well, I haven't setup one myself, but I'm sure all the instructions needed will be included with the product. There is setup needed when you connect it to your network, but that will be one time unless you change the security of the network, in which case you'll have to adjust the settings on the extended also, but all changes will be saved and one time only.

I don't have any specific products to recommend, but a search for wireless extenders on any retail site will give you some products.

Homeplug systems are problematical within one wiring ring -- so be prepared to ask questions of the dealer and if buying do so on the understanding that a refund will be forthcoming if homeplug doesn't work in your proposed setup.
