I know I am not the only one to have this issue, but have not seen a
real fix...

When our lab users try to save or open Hotmail attachments (Doc, PDF,
XLS) recieve the error "Internet Explorer cannot download
....94ea....... from 64.4.61.250. Internet Explorer was not able to open
this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailiable or cannot
be found. Please try again later."

I found some links that seem to indicate there are other having the same
issue.

1) http://www.pcbanter.net/showthread.php?t=772096
2) http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum22/3794.htm

I had the user use Firefox and it worked fine, so it seems to be IE
specific. Is there something I need to change in IE and if so, can I do
it VIA GP?

If you think it to be an IE issue, whay are you asking in a WinXP News Group and not an IE
News Group ?

So ?

The problem should be posted in an IE News Group since that is what the news Group
specializes on.

Did you know that IE is a CORE part of the XP OS and NOT a third party
browser?

Hello Matthew,

According to your description, I understand that when your lab users
download the attachments from Hotmail web site, they receive an error
message.

Matthew, I am afraid that Dave is correct that this is an IE issue which
may be best addressed in IE newsgroup. However, it's all right that we can
work on this issue in this newsgroup.

Based on my experience and research, this issue could be caused by
different reasons. I would suggest you use the following steps to see if
it resolves this issue:

Step 1
======
If you use IE 6 SP1, this issue could occur if you access a secure site
(https) or link to a secure site to download attachments. The following
article has addressed this concern:

319032 An Error Message Occurs If You Click "Save Target As" for a Link
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=319032

Step 2
======
The following setting will raise this issue in IE 5.5, please check the
following setting:

1. Start Internet Explorer.

2. On the View menu, click Internet Options.

3. On the Advanced tab, clear the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk"
check box.

4. Browse to the page where you received the error.

5. Right-click the file link, click Save Target As, select a destination,
and then click Save.

Step 3
=====
1) Open IE->Tools->Internet Options->Click Delete Cookies, Delete Files,
Clear History buttons
2) Click Advanced tab->Click Restore Defaults
3) Under Browsing, click to clear the "Enable third-party browser
extensions (requires restart)" check box.
4) Click Connection tab->LAN settings->Clear all checks
5) Click Security tab->Click Default Level button

Step 4
======
Remove any plug-ins in IE:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall Windows operation system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

1). Click Start, click Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and click OK.
2). Click the plus signs (+) next to the following branches to expand them:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension

3). From the Registry menu, click Export to store the key
4). In the left pane, right click the Extension sub-key, click Delete, and
click Yes to confirm.

5). Use the same steps to backup and then remove third party related keys
under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

6). Use the same steps to backup and delete the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browse
r Helper Objects

7). Close the registry editor.

Step 5:
=======

If there is some third-party designed for IE, such as spyware installed,
please remove it. You can remove spyware by using the removal tool:
http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet

Note: The third-party product discussed is manufactured by a vendor
independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
regarding this product's performance or reliability.

Step 6
======
Corrupt Temporary Internet Files folder.

1. Log on another user.
2. Remove <drive>:\Documents and Settings\<original account>\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder completely.

Also check c:\documents and settings\<user profile>\Local Settings. Get
properties of History folder, and remove read-only attribute and apply to
all sub folders and files.

3. User the original user account to logon to the computer to test this
issue.

Alternatively, you can observe if this issue occurs in the new user account
so we can see if it is related to user account.

Step 7
=====================
Refer to the following article to perform a Clean Boot.

Q310353 How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q310/3/53.asp

Please try the suggestion above and let me know the result at your earliest
convenience.

This is a Windows XP newsgroup. IE5.5 is N/A.

If WinXP SP2, see IE Tools > Manage add-ons, instead of messing about in the
Registry.

Interesting to see a MSFT rep pointing a user to Ad-aware SE via CNET
downloads.

This has been re-posted in an IE newsgroup. As for why I posted it
here? I don't know for certain. I was not SURE it was IE, and thought
maybe it was a SP2 security enhancement. I also thought possibly if
it was a GP change, maybe this newsgroup might be the correct place to
post it. To some posters here, please be a little more kinder in your
responses to individuals. Some replys were written, in my opinion, a
little harshly. In any event, I have moved it.

Hello Matthew,

I have noticed your new post in IE newsgroup and my colleague, Vincent, has
replied there and will continue working on this issue until it is fixed.
Let's focus on that thread.

Regarding this situation, I totally understand that you are not sure about
the cause of this issue and post here to make a clear idea for it. I think
it's OK for posting in this newsgroup or IE newsgroup. It's always our
pleasure to be of assistance.

We invite you post back if you have any issues on Windows XP in the future.

Have a nice day!
