How do I determine ping?

I want to get a new internet plan, but I want to know what will be my ping after getting the plan, since im going to be online gaming a lot. Do you need to calculate it or is it about where you live?

ping is more dependant on the servers they communcate if your in san jose and join a japanese server the ping will be like 500-1200ms, if its satelite, dsl probably same as connectining to a japanese server.

i think hes talking about knowing his ping before he gets his new plan. yeah pingtest and speed test are great websites for knowing your ping/speed. your upload should be the same as they told you so a 5up should be 5up the download however most likely will be a little lower(50mbps sometimes might be 40's)

You can do it if you really want to dig and figure out how the ISP has things put together. First step is to try to get any IP address they use in the neighborhood. Worst case if you can get any ip in the same city. You of course need the server IP you want to determine the speed.

Now the hard part and where you will learn how the internet really works.

I would start with a site called fixedorbit.com and key in the 2 ip addresses in the tools screen under AS number. What you are trying to figure out is what ISP the server company uses and it may be multiple. You then want to be sure you know what ISP your ISP uses for its uplink providers. If it is a large one they may directly connect to the server company.

So once you have some of the large ISP you want to go looking for what is called lookingglass sites. These are sites that let you run ping and traceroute commands from the ISP routers. Not all ISP have them but most do. You would then attempt to ping routers near the cities you are interested in and see what the ping and traceroute show.

Note if you are very lucky and your ISP has a looking glass server router in the city you live in you could just ping from that router directly to the server you want to test to.

This is a sample of what a looking glass site looks like this one happens to be from level3 which is a large tier1 international ISP, They normal provide services for large companies and other ISP.

So if you really want to dig around you can find out lots of interesting stuff but I suspect it will be much easier to try to find someone who has service from the ISP and ask them what numbers they see.
