I have just completed my build and have installed a bunch of my drivers, when a friend of mine gave a a 36gig raptor
that h wasn't going to use for free (I just love free!!). My question is how do I install xp on this drive and have it so it is renamed C:?
I really don't mind erasing everything on my other 200gig drive and restarting if that's what I have to do ( it's a brand new build, so it's not to big of a pain). If anyone knows the process to do this, please help.

Thank you!

For best results format and then unplug that 200gb drive, install the raptor, install windows on the raptor (may require a driver floppy for windows installer to see it, hit f6 during setup and provide the sata controller drivers on a floppy), then plug the 200gb back in.

Actually... It would probably be easier just to leave the 200gb hooked up. You will get that screen during windows setup asking about partitions, just delete the partition on that 200gb drive and format it then. Then select the 36gb raptor as the windows install location.

What do you mean installing it on another PC? If you have formatted drives it is like xp was never installed in that machine to begin with. The only thing anypart of xp resides on is the hard drive, everything else in your computer is just there to run it :)

What I mean is that by reinstalling it on another drive, won't I need to re-register the product, and the get to deal with the stellar customer support in India?

Weel, I'll give this a whirl and see what happens. THANK YOU!!!

I don't think the overall computer hardware changed enough to warrant a call to india to get the registration reset or whatever.

In setup, when I press "d" to delete the partition with windows on it, I'm told that I am unable to because it contains "setup information" needed to reinstall the the os, how do I get around that?

When it found your previous windows install did you hit esc to do a new install?
If thats not it you will probably have to make a boot floppy and do the format from there. Dig up a spare floppy disk and go to http://www.bootdisk.com. Get a 95 or earlier boot disk image and make the disk. Then boot off of it and do a format c:. Those floppies arn't going to see the raptor so the only drive that appears will be 200gb drive. Or is that 200gb drive sata too? If you are using southbridge controlled sata it might see both drives, if so format c: and d: just to make sure :)

Of course both drives are sata! okay, this is going to be fun!! I am using a Asus a8v deluxe mobo so I guess I'll just pray that something works. Also, can I just load windows on the raptor and then rename it c:?

It will become C: by default because it will be the only windows install will be on it.

Does Norton Ghost recognize your SATA drives?

If so start an install on the Raptor, (with the 160 disconnected)), and stop when it starts copying files to the hard drive.

Connect the 160 and Ghost your OS over to the Raptor.

This works with IDE drives.

BTW if you create a new partion for windows and there is already an C: partion somewhere, Your OS partion will end up having some drive letter other than C:.

Thats why you should have the 160 disconnected when you install your OS.

As far as I know there is no way to change the OS partion's drive letter.
