I'd like to be able to transfer files to and from my laptop and desktop. I am under the impression it is possible with just an ethernet cable? I have no idea how to set this up so if someone could explain how to do so in Win10 or direct me to a good "how to" that would be awesome.

Solution
I have two ethernet cables that run into my room from the same router.
So is the only way to do this via a router, or can they be directly connected?
How do I set up a shared folder?

Assuming your desktop and laptop only have a single ethernet port each, a "direct" connect would negate connection to the outside world.

Shared folders is by far the easiest way. And you'd have to 'share' that data anyway, even with a direct connection.
