Well, my 760 can handle it on ultra average 45-60FPs no mods. So I would imagine much, much better.

A GTX 970 is basically the same performance as a EXTREMELY super clocked Enga 780

Skyrim will run extremely well on a GTX 970, even when heavily modded. At least at 1080p.

I currently have a 770 (Monday for my 970!) and my Skyrim is pretty heavily modded, got tons of high res texture packs, and a very demanding ENB installed, all found on the Nexus. My Skyrim installation is up to 36GBs, and my 770 runs at around 50 FPS usually with lows in 40s, all at max settings/1080p. The 2GB of VRAM on my 770 is maxed out as soon as I load up my save, can't wait to play with a 4GB 970.

unless you have an AMD processor you'll be fine with skyrim.

Woohoo this is the one I'm getting for my first ever build. Building it just for Skyrim, so this is good news.

The extreme version looks sick but I don't know how much more that would be.

I asked a similar question. Basically with my i5 4570k and 8gb ram and with an 1GB amd 6870 graphics card I was getting 10 - 12 fps in the worst parts of the map (1920*1080). (Swim due south from the lady stone and wander about 30m inland. Stand on a single rectangular ish rock.)
This is with no high res texture pack, but with Phinix Natural ENB and ELFX and high density grass (unbelievable grass 1k ). High density grass kills framerates! So not many mods, though a good enb and my character is nicely modded. Btw with enb off here I was probably getting 30 or 40 fps.

With my new msi gtx 970 (4GB) out of the box I am getting 32 fps+ in the worst part, everything else being the same . So approx 3 times faster than my old card. Most places are now 60fps+. (With ENB off in the worst part I am now getting 70 - 90fps ish)
I am now off to get some high res textures to try

the gtx970 is plenty for extreme modded skryim at 1440p. as long as you "mod" the game correctly you will have no problems.

skyrim modding is sort of an art, you cannot just toss a bunch of mods together and expect skyrim to work correctly. you should really use mod packs or find lists of known mods from reputable modders. otherwise all mods need to be bashed, tagged, cleaned, and ordered before you can start a new game/new save file.... otherwise you run the almost inevitable risk of killing a save game file rending the game useless. figure on about a 4 hour learning curve to understanding skyrim and modding the programs needed and another 4 hours of computer work actually using those programs, not including mod download times.
