I've got a P4E 3GHz with HT, Stock cooling gear.

What's the normal operating temp? My monitoring gear says that on normal idle it's running around 46ºC or 114ºF

Is this normal? About what would be the danger zone temp wise?

Ive got that same CPU. Your idle is ok, and Ill bet that your temps under load will be ok. We do need to know what your temps max out at under stress. My 3.0E never gets above 56C even when its Overclocked to 3.6

Thanks, but the 3.0E couldnt get much better than it is now. ITs OC'd to 3.6 on air, and still stays at 56C or less under a full load. Now that I also have a socket 775 the socket 478 heat issues dont seem like an issue at all. Ive got my 3.4 running at 4.3 at this very moment. I think that its safe to say that if we were having a contest to see who could get their CPU the hottest, I would be the one to bet on

I just got my 3.2E with CO stepping today and OC that sucker to 3.4Mhz. I'm using Micron 256MB PC3200 and Samsung 256MB PC2700. The heat sink and fan is TT7 Xaser. Idle at 49-50 degree and full load at 61 degree. TT has auto fan control and seem to run full speed at 56 degree. The fan scream like a bitc...

I took out my 2.8B (D1 stepping) that was OC to 3.25 and wonder if that was a good idea. Only idle at 38-41 degree and did not sweat a full load of 50-52 degree. The Prescott tend to heat thing up.

Do you have the stock Intel heatsink and fan? If you do then you may want to try it. The intel heatsink and fan does a better job of cooling than alot of aftermarket products. Did you know that when you run 2 different speeds of RAM they will both only run as fast as the slowest one? What brand thermal paste did you use ?

OEM CPU, so there is no Intel Heatsink and Fan with it. I do know that RAM will operate at slowest RAM speed when there two different type of RAM. The compound I use is Silicon Heat Sink compound type Z9.

I'm not sure if dual channel is working. I did not check the manual book, opps. The motherboard did not comes with manual book since it is a refurb board. I have to check it on-line. Is there a quick way to see if dual channel is working? The PC2700 was from a previous PC and did not felt like buying another stick of PC3200.

Also I got this CPU from another person and it did not cost that much, but I did gain more heat with this CPU.

I just switch my AMD PC to Intel PC.
Swith the RAM from DIMM 1 and 2 to DIMM 1 and 3. DIMM 1 and 3 should be for the dual channel.

Run SiSoftware Sandra's memory benchmark. My score was:
Ram Bandwidth Int Buff'd iSSE2 2553 MB/s
Ram Bandwidth Float Buff'd iSSE2 2561 MB/s

Is this dual channel?

Since I'm running benchmark, here the two other scores using Sandra 2005 version.

Arithmetic Benchmark
Dhrystone ALU - 9964 MIPS
Whetstone FPU - 3934 MFLOPS
Whetstone iSSE2 - 7125 MFLOPS

CPU Multi-Media Benchmark
Integer x8 iSSE2 - 2419 it/s
Float x4 iSSE2 - 32040 it/s

Yes, OC to 3.4
Probably the PC 2700 is slowing the system down.

Time to hit the shower and sleep. Even though the CPU is hot, does not mean I have to be too. Time to take a shower to cool thing down.
