Planning on buying a new graphics card. Will Rx580 last at 1080p? and yes I'm not planning on buying the 8gb variant. thanks....

Solution
How long it will "last" depends on what someone wants out of it. If you expect to maintain 60fps at ultra settings in the latest AAA games, then it might not last for all that long. It's in a similar performance range as the GTX 1060 6GB, which was launched as a mid-range card nearly two years ago, and there will likely be new cards targeting that segment launched within the next several months or so.

It's also worth noting that the prices of these cards are really messed up right now, mainly due to cryptocurrency miners creating a shortage. When the RX 580 8GB and GTX 1060 6GB launched, they were both approximately $250 cards, while the RX 580 4GB and GTX 1060 3GB were intended to be $200 cards. Miners created a shortage last...

how long do you think this will last cause i plan to future proof my rig

Miners created a shortage last summer that messed up their prices, especially for the AMD cards, and just as the prices were getting almost back to normal around the new year, another run on cards by miners caused prices to skyrocket once again, this time also affecting higher and lower-end cards across the board.

In my opinion, at the massively inflated prices these cards are currently selling for, they're not really worth it. It seems likely that prices will come down quite a bit later in the year, though how much or when exactly is anyone's guess.

What gpu do you think I should buy? any advice?

Personally, I think waiting is a reasonable option right now, considering that Nvidia will likely be launching new cards this summer. I also suspect it won't be long until we hear about new cards coming from AMD as well. And of course, graphics card prices are quite high right now, and chances are good that they will improve over the coming months, potentially getting you more performance for your money.

If you want a card now though, I would recommend going with Nvidia's offerings for the time being. The prices of AMD's cards have risen more than Nvidia's, due in part to their relatively strong cryptocurrency mining performance, as well as them having less supply to begin with. A GTX 1060 6GB should offer similar gaming performance to an RX 580, and should generally be available at a lower price right now. It should also use less power and create less heat than the 580. There's also a 3GB version of the 1060, but keep in mind that it has 10% fewer processing cores, and as a result will perform around 10% slower in today's games. The lower amount of VRAM in the 3GB version isn't likely to matter all that much today at 1080p, but could have a greater impact on performance in more games coming out within the next couple years, making it a less than ideal option for "future proofing".

From there, the prices climb quite a bit for the GTX 1070 and higher, and AMD's cards in that performance range, the Vega 56 and 64, are pretty much unavailable right now, at least at anything resembling a semi-reasonable price.
