Listen, the option I'm suggesting costs $39 :)

Then, worry about upgrading down the road when you have spare change.

My option is the least costly and will give you the most bang for you buck, easily...atleast for now.

Oh, well do that after you get "the spare change" and upgrade....then you'll have another stock PC like he's saying to sell....I'm sure you'll find a sucker somewhere and recoup most of your initial investment :)

LMAO, OK Pershing, I made the post you quoted as a joke, but that was in reference to the CPU coolers, not the processors.

Now, yes, physicaly, all AM2+ processors will FIT in AM2 motherboards, but this is no guarantee that they will work. It will depend if Gateway released a BIOS update to support AM2+ processors.

What I was saying Pershing is that since you upgraded your ram and your psu already you basically have a spare set lying around atm. I wasn't saying to "throw" anything away, I was saying that if you return your system to stock you could probably sell it and then put that money towards a decent system. Keep your psu/ram/video card ns use them in a new system in the future.

Building a pc is actually super easy and I'm surprised that more people don't do themselves. If you can go buy a $20 lego set and follow the directions on how to put it together you can build a pc. In any event a new cpu is not gonna increase your frame rate in most games. In a game like Crysis you could spend $3k on a pc and still have issues. Crysis is a poorly coded game. Whereas a game like Farcy2 looks just as good and easily runs much higher fps on the same hardware.

btw, farcry 2 rocks!

correct me if i'm wrong b-unit, but aren't there compatibility issues with the chipsets used on AM2 only boards that prevent the AM2+ from functioning properly? of course I'm sure an updated bios could work around these issues, but well....i sure as hell wouldn't want that rig :)

AMD designed socket AM2+ to be backwards compatable with exsiting AM2 solutions. The only limiting factor is BIOS support.

Now, to be fair, Phenom chips(read: AM2+) are designed to run on a faster HT speed, but they will function just as well with the old standard. (1000Mhz vs 2600Mhz)

EDIT: In fact, early boards sold as AM2+ used old chipsets that only ran up to 1000Mhz HyperTransport.

Hmmm...maybe I'm confused...or maybe you're confused, or maybe we're all confused 😉 but, yes AM2+ boards are backwards compatible with AM2 cpu's, but AM2 boards are not compatible (maybe some) with AM2+ cpu's. :)

He wants to put an AM2+ cpu in a AM2 board..not the other way around, and I'm sure you could run an AM2+ @1000Mhz HT, and probably not notice a FSB bottlenock, but why even do it? and more importantly, isn't the real problem going to be with the northbridge?

To avoid having to buy a new motherboard. I would think thats obvious.

lol...well, where he's at, it's either mobo or cpu...he's buying one of the other.... the mobo is cheaper ,gives more options, and no doubt about compatibility.

From wiki:

So, I stand somewhat corrected. They are compatible, but regardless I still say it's not a good idea. Even if your mobo manuf. has release an updated BIOS to support this, I see problems.

Furthermore, it would be IMO, a much better choice to buy a cheaper mobo now that will fully support an AM2+ cpu in the future, and as stated above in the quote will have support for AM3 cpus. With that said, I'd buy the mobo...overclock your 4600+ and wait for the AM3 😉 but that's just me

One thing that would seriously add to the cost that I just thought of in a new build would be the cost of a new OS like vista. Sometimes if you swap out a mobo in a build you need a new OS install. Now this isn't really a big issue in many cases excpet that when manufacturers like Dell leave the ghost copy on the hard drive that it won't accept new hardware. I've had this problem multiple times trying to upgrade peoples econo-box dells and i'm sure that it's also the case for their higher end systems. Since i'm assuming Pershong doesn't already have a copy of vista he would need to borrowa disk from someone to change out mobo's and then call MS to activate his key for his machine.

Or run linux :)

jk....I like Vista (took me awhile to convert), but damn I'm tired of it hogging my RAM, and I don't agree with the whole cache argument...I want my RAM available for when I fire up Dreamweaver, Illustrator and GOW all at once! lol

But seriously it's like this (if you ask me)...you own a legit copy of Vista, then dowload an .iso of the exact version....make sure it's clean...and rock...who needs friends? lol :)

why would I replace everything outside the processor and mobo? I mean I already have good ram, video and psu and case, keyboard/mouse/speakers, so what else outside a processor and possinbly mobo would I need?

Also I heard assasins creed and gta 4 are a lot worse coded than Crysis.

how do I find out if my bios is updated and supported form this motherboard?

So would that quad phenom that runs at 94 watts be compatible on my mobo at 95 watt max (as someone stated though not sure where they got the limit info from)?

I doubt that am3's will be affordable for a while, and I dont want to risk having to reinstall vista, so I just want a new processor.

"they are talking about heat sinks for AM2 being compatible with AM2+ not AM2+ cpu's being able to go into AM2 boards. "

If I bought a phenom x4 processor that is am2+ for my am2 motherboard, wo9uldnt it already come with a heatsink that would work? or not only do am2 heatsinks not go into am2+ but am2+ heatsinks not go into am2?

The likelyhood that gateway gave you a mobo capable of running a phenom cpu is decidedly low. Also due to most games wanting clock speed and not being programmed to utilize 4 cores the performance can actually decrease if you get a phemon with a lower clock speed.

In any event I was using a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ Brisbane 2.1GHz in a build waiting for the phenoms to come out, after they did and I noticed the problems that AMD was having I went and got a 5000+BE and then overclocked it to 3.0 in like 2 min. Performance difference in games? No fps change at all, even when i adjust the clock on the cpu I have now from 2.6 to 3.1 I don't see even a bit of change since i'm using a 9800gtx+ card

Likelihood=slim to none :)

Pershing may find no fps change with increased cpu also...this is also why I recommend the new mobo...right now pershing we should be finding your bottleneck....

But first, did you fix that heatshink? lol

How about sending us some shots of cpuid...

You're one confusing dude....what grade are you in?

Listen, didn't you tell us you bought new RAM, new PSU and new videocard?

Did you read what he was actually saying???

Tell you what, do what you wanna do man...let us all know how it turns out :)

well the easiest way to overclock it is to simply get a new cheap motherboard. since it is a manufactured computer it will only get about a .3 ghz overclock

Has been my argument from the beginning, but he seems dead set on new cpu for some reason...so gl :)

yea I heard something like every game besides crysis and gta 4 only utilizes dual core? Anyway I am guessing this is the reason I get such low fps in ut 2004 (older game) than Stalker, because it only utilizes one core?
