but I did notice a huge difference in 3dmark06 scores by simply overclocking my card a bit and my cpu cores by 150 mghs. Also I am having a hard time playing team fortress 2 online with 32 people in times of heavy fighting while running it on full with full anti aliasing. I just cant play games any other way though, its either full graphics or nothing for me I simply cant enjoy games with crappy grpahics.

cpuz image.

I havent tinkered with the heatsink because it works the way it is and I dont want to risk messing it up more since I dont have any thermal fluid and it was alreayd very thin due to the amount of times I took it out tinkering with it. Once a friend lets me borrow some fluid I might try fixing it. But I am palnning on getting that 6000+ anyway so I might just let it burn and replace it with that.

also which fans do I increase to help cool the cpu on speedfan?

WOW dude!....lol....you know about the heat problems with 6000+? but that's cool...how about you sell me that 4600+ really cheap since you're ok with burning it up? lol

how's $10+shipping sound?

I got an Asus board that'll work real nice in :)

btw...fan1 is probably your cpu fan, and fan2 is probably your other fan, wherever it may be.

but your fan speeds seem low to me....did you disable cool 'n quiet in the bios?

Well, there should be a listing of supported CPU's somewhere on your motherboard/PC support pages. But what we are trying to tell you is that Gateway isn't interested in giving you an upgrade path, so the odds of there being an updated BIOS with Phenom support are slim to none. Gateway wants to sell you a whole new PC, kinda hard to do if you can just spend $100-$300 and get like-new performance.

To be honest, even tho his people skills are at about a 0, WiZdoM is advocating the best solution. A 6000+ may or may not give you much of a performance increase. Your two options really are A) a new motherboard (and for the love of god don't get a cheep one if the objective is to overclock) for your exsiting CPU and then OC to the 2.8Ghz-3.0Ghz range, or B) both a new motherboard and CPU. You can put a new CPU into your exsiting board, but its the least 'future proof' option.

DISCLAIMER: I hate to use the term 'future proof' as there really is no such thing, but think of it in these terms

You buy a new CPU, while 'new' in the sense its fresh from the factory, its a 2.5-3 year old design. Its already at the end of its life.

You buy a new motherboard, it works with your current CPU, plus has the ability to support a truly 'new' CPU down the road.

"To be honest, even tho his people skills are at about a 0, WiZdoM is advocating the best solution."

Awesome, "Ummmm...." suppose that's better than -1? :)

Lol!

It's okay wizdom I've just about giving up hope, in any event though buying a $300 econobox and expecting decent performance isn't very realistic and then to be throwing more money into it...

I'm sure that pershing you have probably spent somewhere in the ballpark of $250-300 already? Psu+ram+gpu? Adding in a cpu $86 on newegg and a decent cpu cooler $45 (you'll need it)

You could have done something like this:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-2-overclock,2113.html

with an amd mobo and cpu it woulda been cheaper add in a copy of vista and you'd still be in the same ballpark. Depending on whether you get a retail or oem copy.

Oh I had another quick thought on your current pc pershing those manufactured pc's usually come with a lot of "bloatware" that runs in the background that can eat up system resources you might want to check on the amount of proccess that you cpu is maintaining having your cpu loaded down would hurt your performance as well. and have problems with 25ppl on screen isn't really that bad and also gameplay > graphics anyday you can have a totally unplayable game be the best looking in the world it's not gonna be any fun.

I know a dude who said he build a 200 dollar computer including an 8800 gs and a 15 ollar newegg 550 watt psu special and a 2 gig ram for 10 bucks that they made a mistake and sent him 2 instead of the 1 he ordered and 30 dollar motherboard that was form some discounted company with no future bios updates. So in the end he spend a lot less than me and including a more powefrul video card and psu. Oh and he had a pirated xp copy already ready to install on it.

LMAO :)

How many rails did this guys psu have? and how many amps on each rail? $15 for RAM? sure slow as all hell RAM. Now lets not forget DVD, HDD, Case, power cord ($15 psu no power cord), fans, etc.

If he happened to "stumble" upon a decent copy of Windows through lets say Demonoid or something...well whatever.

Point is, people skills aside, look at the specs below. Less than $450 for a system that will play ANY GAME OUT right now (with great fps - 60 fps steady GOW - 45 fps Crysis), including GTA4 (with it's whacked out coding) on maxed graphics. And, I've even laxed the overclocking quite a bit from where I had it, so I've still got room if needed.

a 200 dollar computer most likely wont have great perdormance. besides if you are heavy into gaming then i would look to something other than the 8800gs.

Right on :)

he ordered only 1 gig thats why it was so cheap but they sent him 2, and it was 667 mghs (mine came with 500 mghs at stock). He probably already had a case/keybboard/mouse lying around and got the other parts for real cheap too. I mean most people here spent thousands building one yet he spent 200 and just recently bought mass effect.

Well I suppose that every once in awhile you fall into a great deal like newegg mis-shipping multiple items and trying to clear out their old inventory but no way could you build a pc from scratch for $200 and expect it to play games!! I could spend well over $200 on just 1 video card.

After rebates before shipping and tax $195 =)

*my phenomII build is looking to cost around $2500 atm =( I'm gonna wait to see the performance reviews first though and if they're bad i'll be an Intell user /sigh

I came to realize that we havn't yet answered Pershing's original question on this thread so I'll do so now. I would expect that you could overclock your proccessor to about 2.8 without too much trouble and if you play with your voltages and ram and your (if your mobo allows) adjusting the divider for the rest of your hardware and heat isn't an issue then you can squeeze 3.0 out of it. 3.0 would be a 250mhz fsb and 2.8 would be a 233fsb, if you had ddr2 800 ram 2.8ghz you could run a /8 and get 400mhz ram though if the ram you have is decent i'm betting that going from 667 to 800 oc isn't a problem loosen the timings a bit and start tightening them up I would think once you have the cpu running stable. Though I think other people might have a different approach. What do you guys think?

I totally agree...those overclocks seem easily obtainable....only one problem, he's running a stock mobo from a bundled pc...kinda what led into this whole other charade of...well whatever the hell it was :)... he needs a new mobo so he can overclock his cpu...but now after looking a bit further up, it seems he's saying his RAM speed is 500Mhz??? idk..and I don't feel like rereading this entire thread to try and figure out what exactly he does have for RAM.

As for the price discussion....IMO (b/c this is what I'm running) $450 will buy you a badazz gaming pc... I just installed GTA4 last night and I'm running it with no problems (not maxed b/c even with -norestrict etc., will not allow me to max out graphics...but I'll figure it out). Of course, most of my budget went to the vid card :)

Well, I see you are factoring MIR into the prices...personally I would opt for the 4GB of gskill RAM, even though higher priced after MIR. Yeah I know, we're going for $200 budget. As for that foxconn mobo, one major problem with that is the location of PCIe lane in regards to the RAM slots, NB and batter. If you're using a big vidcard like I am, the card will cover up the batter, PCI lane, half the NB and make it very hard to snap and unsnap the RAM... now if you take a look at the layout of this mobo...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.aspx?ISList=13-186-151-S01,13-186-151-S02,13-186-151-S03,13-186-151-S04,13-186-151-S05&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16813186151&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=Foxconn%20A74MX-K%20Micro%20ATX%20AMD%20Motherboard%20-%20Retail

you'll see it is a much better layout...and (a bit cheaper after MIR)...

but good $200 build hathost 😀

PS...maybe I'll throw 5 of these together w/Ubuntu and set them in the front window...@ say $399 :) of course we'll need another $15 for cheapo chinese mouse/keyb/speakers

I built a similar system on geeks.com not long ago, came to $350 with everything including a 17 lcd monitor.

Yeah for that pc build all I did was look up the bare minimum to get a pc together and took all the cheapest materials I could to see what would happen. I didn't even look at the detailed specs for each item and it took me all of 3 min to cut and paste url's lol.

Also since I'm totally bored and for some reason fascinated on the thread (idk why) i couldn't find any detailed specs on the mobo for specific cpu support and to my way of thinking if I were Gateway I would purposely want a crippled mobo so that were someone like pershing to put a cpu with a tdp thats too high the mobo is fried. Then when he's like wth they can go well warranty voided not our fault then he's out the cost of the pc.

I'm also very familiar with that case he has since I do some pc repair work for friends/family and I can tell you it's a pain in the @$$. It has only one 80mm exhaust fan on it and the cpu fan ducted to the side. Some of the main problems with it that i've come across is heat issues, and thats at the regular clock speeds. Also if you recall the pic's of the mobo that he posted earlier they show that it doesn't have a typical mount for a AMD socket. Gateway uses that sideport cooler and have been for years. Same with that case, i've pulled old P4 parts outta them cases and tried to work on upgrading them and it's just not worth it. I usually convince ppl to get a better case, usually i tear down the unit and canniblize it for whatever can be reused, like hdd optical drives etc. and put a new mobo and cpu into a case like an antec300 and buy 2-3 quiet case fans. Usually I can get a low budget system going for about $300 upgrades, typically a psu/mobo/cpu/gpu.

Gateway case: http://support.gateway.com/s/CASES/GERSHWIN/3507057Riv.shtml

WHy cant somebody simply make a custom bios and allow people to download it and flash gateway and other oem motherboards that dont support am2+ to support it?

that would be entirely stupid, they would lose so much business and potential lawsuits (even if lost it would sitll cost them lawyers money looka t sony who plays good boy now).
