How to Backup Emails in Mail App in Windows 8

Unlike earlier versions of Microsoft Windows, Windows 8/8.1 does not provide any backup feature for the Mail app to back up the email messages that you send or receive. However, with a smart workaround, you can still backup email messages, and can reuse them by restoring them to the same location on any other computer, or on the same computer after you have reinstalled Windows 8 right from the scratch.

In order to back up the emails from the Mail app in Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer, you must follow the steps given below:

    ■Log on to the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer with your user account.
    ■From the Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
    ■Once on the desktop window, click File Explorer from the taskbar.
    ■On the opened This PC window, double-click C:\ drive.

    ■Go to C:\Users\jmoore\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Indexed\LiveComm
    where ‘jmoore’ is the name of the logged in user which may differ in your case, and the characters that are italicized and marked in red are the random numbers generated differently on different machines.

    ■Once you are in the LiveComm folder, dig into all the subfolders till the time you see the familiar folders named Account, Mail, and People.

    ■Once you see the above three main folders, double-click the Mail folder to get into it.
    ■Inside the Mail folder, the subfolder named 1 is the default folder for the Microsoft’s default account.
    ■The other folders that are available represent the different mail accounts that have been configured in the Mail app.

10. Double-click any folder and you will find the email messages as different files. The names of the files would be in unreadable format.
11. In order to view the filenames (which actually are the email messages) in the understandable language, type the asterisk (*) in the File Explorer search bar that is by default present at the top right corner of the window.
Note: You might need to double-click and check each folder from the list, and follow the smart trick described in step 11 in order to find the exact email account and its messages that you want to archive.
12. As soon as you will type the asterisk (*) in the File Explorer search bar, all the sender names of the emails will be displayed in the user-friendly language.

13. You can then choose the desired email messages from the list, and can copy them to a different location from where you can restore the messages to their original locations whenever required.
