Windows 10 error Event ID7031 is categorized as an EVENT_SERVICE_CRASH and usually occurs on shutdown. It is often caused by Windows detecting a service shutting down unexpectedly and Service Control Manager flagging it as error 7031. If you’re seeing this and want to fix Windows 10 error Event ID7031, here’s what you need to do.

The short answer is that Event ID7031 is a bug in Windows 10 that has yet to be addressed by Microsoft. They have a KnowledgeBase article on it here and at the time of writing (July 2016) there is no fix for the error.

Windows 10 error Event ID7031 is related to OneDrive and its OneSyncSvc_Session service and happens when a restart signal is sent to Windows. The service terminates but then immediately tries to restart while Windows is still shutting down.

Fortunately, this isn’t a critical issue and the OneSyncSvc_Session just restarts once you boot your computer again.

There are a couple of workarounds if you really don’t like seeing the error. It’s a registry tweak that will result in the loss of People, Calendar and the Mail app. It will also impact OneDrive as you might expect. Take a backup of your registry and perform a system backup before trying it.

1. Type or paste ‘regedit’ into the Search Windows box.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\OneSyncSvc.
3. Change the Start item and the ‘"3xxx" OneSyncSvc’ to 4.

As mentioned, Event ID7031 is a minor issue for now that has little or no impact on Windows 10 users. The exception being user switching, which doesn’t happen often. In the meantime, We hope Microsoft has a fix coming soon.
