When you start out in No Man's Sky you are basically dropped onto the surface of a random planet with most of your systems broken, and this includes your ship. The main things broken on your ship is the engines themselves, so you aren't going anywhere unless you fix this smoking hunk of metal. Here's how.
Step 1)Collect iron.
You are going to need 50 iron per sheet of carite, and your starting ship is going to need six in order to repair both the launch thrusters and the pulse engine. You do start with one in your ship inventory and the pulse engine isn't strictly required right away, it just allows you to get to where you are going faster. Iron is very plentiful so you should have no issues finding the metal around your crash site. Be sure to check all the containers strew around your ship and collect anything interesting you might find in those as well. Once you have the iron, access your ship's inventory to get it crafted into the required carite sheets.
Step 2)Collect Heridium.
Now that you've got all the iron you need, you can fix your launch engines by crafting some carite sheets right now, but you are going to need to do more to fix your pulse engine. You are going to first need to find a source of Heridium and gather up 200 units of it. Heridium is usually found in large black pillars, so if you want you can actually hop in your ship if you've refueled it with plutonium, and fly around with just your launch engines until you spot one. They're pretty hard to miss.
Step 3)Collect Zinc.
The last resource you need is going to be zinc. This is probably one of the harder to find resources your ship is going to need for it's repairs. You'll find this in little yellow flowers scattered around the surface of most planets. Keep scouring the area and you're sure to find some, and you are only going to need 20 so it isn't too bad, you should be able to get that in no time.
Now that you have everything you need, go interact with your ship and start those repairs from the ship inventory screen!
