How to get WAP content on a Verizon v710 without MobileWeb?

A few days ago, I upgraded my trusty (Verizon) Startac to a V710.

I was told that I could access WAP content using voice minutes,
albeit slowly, without paying for any extra access.

Since I occasionally could use WAP access, but not $5/month
worth, I thought this would be useful.

However, I can't seem to do so. Opening the browser leads
to a Mobile Web signup page, and the only alternative seems
to require setting a 'Web Session', which looks similar to
a network signup. Is this a signup for a WAP gateway? Are
there any free ones?

What am I doing wrong? If I can't get this going, I'm
probably going to return the phone.

I think someone is mixing up two different mobile features - you can use
voice minutes to access the internet slowly (or fast, using the 1x network)
by using the phone as a modem or use an alternate wap service for about half
the cost of Verizon's WAP (or find a free wap service that works with your
phone) at the same speed as their wap service.

Someone already posted the url for a less expensive wap service... to access
the internet, you need to connect the phone to the computer.
