Hi guys,

I've turned off indexing because its not useful for SSDs, but in my rig I have 1 SSD (840 EVO 250GB) + 2 HDD (2x 1TB WD Blue).

I can't seem to figure out how to turn indexing on for the HDD only. When I search in the windows bar for things in the HDDs, It doesn't come up with any results

All help appreciated,

Thanks,
Frank

Open File Explorer
Right click on the HDD
Select Properties
In the General Tab, at the bottom: "Allow files on this drive....."

Right ok.

MarkW - The problem with that is the modify box is completely greyed out, maybe because I have no indexing file? Samsung Magician may have got rid of it when optimising for SSD?

USAFRet- That option is enabled but search results still do not appear

Ideas?

Peace, Frank

What do you mean search results do not appear?
Indexing is NOT 'required' to search the drive, it just makes it faster.

I have a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB as my boot drive. I used Magician to optimize the system for the SSD as well. But my Modify button is not grayed out.

Lets try something that Microsoft seems to think will resolve this.

Open Explorer, and navigate to C:\Windows\System32. In that folder, find cmd.exe, and right click on it, and then select Run as Administrator.

That will open up a command prompt window. The command prompt should show C:\Windows\System32 on most systems. At this command prompt, type in sfc /scannow and press Enter.

This is a tool that will check your Windows installation, and attempt to correct any problems it finds. Let it run. At the end, it will provide a log of what it found and did, but its pretty cryptic. On my system, it does tell me it found some corrupted files, and that it was not able to correct them all. But when I go into the log and look, it is referencing files on drive E: and X: which have never existed on this system. So if it says these things to you when it finishes, ignore it.

Once this is done, you can type Exit at the command prompt and the window will close. Then check to see if the Modify button in Indexing Options will work for you.

Hi mate,

That didn't do the trick unfortunately. It said some corrupted files had been fixed. The modify button is still greyed out.

Maybe indexing isn't my immediate problem, but something to do with searching. Why won't any results from my searches from files from my HDD?

Right, there's been a development.

I've now got the modify button available since I made indexing activated in Samsung Magician.

Although I still get no search results for my HDDs

Thanks,
Frank

OK, lets see if Windows Search is even on. And if it is not on, we'll turn it on.

Move your mouse to the lower left corner and right click the windows icon thing.

On the menu that comes up, select Run

In the Run box, type Services.msc

A window will open showing all windows services. Scroll down to Windows Search

Right click on that line, and select Properties. A new window will appear.

First, click on Start. Then change the Startup Type to Automatic. At the bottom, click Apply. At this point, your settings for Windows Search should look just like mine below. And that Modify button in Indexing Options should be usable.

If you go back to Indexing Options now, you should see which drives and folder are now being indexed. C: and D: should both be there (assuming that is the letters they have been assigned). One or both can be checked. You can also exclude folders (see the entries starting in the middle and going to the right edge).

Now one question... Did you do a search and actually find something?
