How to install "net use"

Nothing needs to be installed, it's built in. "net use" is available from the "Run" line or a command line session.

My wife's HP laptop (a few years old) does not recognize the "net" command!! She is running Win XP-3..

What is the output of: "dir c:\windows\system32\net.*"

laptop with problem has win-xp pro/sp3, can i copy the net.exe from a win-xp home/sp3 to the win-xp pro laptop??

You could, but I think you might be finding more system files missing or corrupt. Get a hold of a CD that matches what's installed (Home for Home, Pro for Pro, service pack level must match), put it in the CD/DVD drive, and run "sfc /scannow" It'll replace missing or corrupt files.
