How to make generic ink cartridges work on a hp printer

It's kind of a pain in the butt BUT your printer reads all those little gold dots on the back of your cartridge. If you still have your HP cartridge that was working in your printer then carefully remove it, use a tiny bit of glue stick(not super glue because you're gonna want to use it again so you'll need to peel it off), and place it over the gold dots on the back of your generic cartridge. Carefully install in your printer and PROBLEM SOLVED.

does this work the same for HP Officejet 6500? Trying to use a remanufactured cartridge and had it print a couple of pages, but now print is fading like out of ink. Never did register on the view window that there was any ink in the cartridge, just the big ol' exclamation mark! I pressed the OK to get it to work. Is there something else? Appreciate your help
